THe breakin is almost done on my rebuilt 426 Hemi Challenger & I'm running Valvoline 10/40. Its 10:1, Diamond pistons, Manley rods, Kellog crank, ported Iron heads & has the best in bearings, rings & machine work. I've been told after 5K miles, to run synthetic, but think dino oil is best. What brands have the most zinc & is that important for performance & life? I've heard Rotella T doesn't have good anti-foaming properties. I don't intend to race it (except once in a while on the street), but the summer temps here in Reno are in the 90's to 100. Thanks for the input & this is a fantastic site. Glad I stumbled upon it.

I'm assuming you have flat lifters installed and not rollers correct?
These modern oils are not made for flat lifters except for the HDEO's.
One of the HDEO 15W-40's would be my guess. From what I hear, Amsoil makes a good one.

Yes, I forgot to mention the flat tappet Comp cam & Landy rockers. I heard Valvoline racing oil contains zinc, but can't find it in 40 wt. Is regular Valvoline a good choice? Castrol GTX? Is Amsol a synthetic?
Wow an honest to Buddha HEMI, yupper you are gonna need a heavily fortified oil for those flat tappets. There are alot of choices. If you like Valvoline try Premium Blue I have used this oil in a 70's pontiac flat tapper with good results, one wheel burnouts in the sand and many runs up to 100 mph downhill, in 100 degree weather. You can even get Premium blue in 5w40. But in Reno I would use 15w40. Just my thoughts.
So why not run a synthetic? You can have the necessary additives and synthetic, too:
Amsoil HDEO 15W-40 (code AME)
If you want a 20W-50 with great flow properties and extraordinary protection:Amsoil 20W-50 Racing Oil (code TRO)

You really can't ask for the best oil if you exclude synthetics....

Another vote here for any of the name brand dual rated diesel/gasoline oils (also called HDEO, Heavy Duty Engine Oil).
