Best High-mileage Syn Blend for the $$

I am currently running a mix of 3 qts MaxLife Syn Blend and 2 QTS Napa Full Synthetic in both of my vehicles. One "problem" that I see with MaxLife is that I have heard MaxLife has a low (20%) or unknown synthetic content. I would suggest that the most economical choice, if you are into blending, is a mix of Castrol Magnatec and Castrol High-mileage. Magnatec 5w20 gives you a full synthetic at a conventional price. Magnatec also allows you the ability to control the level of synthetic content.

Actually the best based on price would be Mobil Super HM which is syn-blend as well 30-40% iirc. Its cheaper than maxlife and easier than what you have mentioned above.

I would vote on Either Quakerstate Defy or Mobil super HM. Castrol High mileage I would assume is a blend already.

The only High Mileage oil that has ever worked for me is Maxlife, all the 5QT jugs are within $2 of each other so I just stick with that. I have tried Quaker state High Mileage and Castrol High Mileage, neither performed like Maxlife.

volk06, you are probably correct. I didn't know what the percentages of synthetic were on MSHM. Can anyone verify be the Synthetic content of MaxLife Synthetic Blend?

I saw that one too. That's 5W20 BigD1. The one i posted is 5W30. Not sure which is required by the OP.

NAPA has High Mileage oil on sale for 2.59 a quart through 12/31.

Smitty`s from K-Mart $8 bucks for a 5qt jug.. its a syn blend high mileage oil. good stuff.

The price of Smitty's HM can't be beat when KMart puts it on sale. Too bad I hate shopping there.

Don't worry unduly about what you've heard.
In my personal experience in cars I've actually used it in, Maxlife SB is good stuff as is Mobil 1 High Mileage.
GTX HM and Defy both proved worthless in reducing leaks/consumption.

If it meets the required specs and operates and performs as intended why does the % content of Syn matter?

I'm just curious at to what that 20% stuff is in their oil that they're charging customers more for.

Synthetic blend is a marketing term and is useless as an indicator of quality. "Conventional" Chevron Supreme is a synthetic blend in 5W-20 and 5w30 grades if you read the spec sheet, but they don't bother putting that on the bottle. Some oils get to the base oil quality they need with group II+ base stocks. Others get there with a blend of group III and group II. The later can claim to be a synthetic blend, but it doesn't mean anything. Rolling your own blend might be fun, but is also of little consequence.

With any of the name brand oils you can pretty much buy based on the best currently available price and not worry about it.
