Shell gives you 5% back, Sunoco 3%...not sure about other. Anyone here use one to buy their gas?

citibank is good; 5% at all brands of gas stations AND supermarkets... 1% elsewhere. Around me, the walmarts with food sections ring up as supermarkets.

Chase, IIRC, has a 6% deal that rolls back to 3%.

I use my Business American Express Card and get a "big whooping" 2% back for Exxon/Mobil purchases. Years ago I had a Shell "cash back" Mastercard and I found out if you didn't spend great wads of money monthly on Shell gas with their credit card they then started charging you great wads of money for the "privilege" of having "their card". But in today's competitive enviroment I'm sure it's different. In fact, thanks Buster, I think I'll check into a Shell card again, especially since we have two in town and several on the highways we frequently travel.

Earlier this year I got a Shell Mastercard card simply for the 5% on gas and 1% on other purchases. If Chevron had a better offer I would have gotten their card instead.

I second the Citi Cards MasterCard called their Dividend Card I beleive. Its great. It gives you 5% back on all gas stations no matter what brand it is and 5% back at any grocery or drug store. Plus 1% on all other purchases. I used to have an Exxon mastercard that gave back 3% but this one is far better because I can use what ever gas brand i want with a 5% dividend. When you save $50 or more with this card Citi will send you a check in the mail. Nice card!

But you would have to buy a GM vehicle to benefit from it, wouldn't you?

Or you could get one that gives you 5% cash back, and put it towards a new GM vehicle, or a new Mopar vehicle, or a new Ford vehicle, or more gas, or food, or beer, or whatever.

I can honestly say I played that game for over 6 years.

I have faithfully used my discovercard and racked up over 300 in cash per year. That's right I've charged and payed off over 30,000 per year and never paid them a dime in interest.

Until 2 months ago when I was a little short and only paid 1/2 of the balance off which was a little over $4,000. So the next month I owed $2000 plus a $99 finance charge.

So far all those years, I've paid $99, but the moral of the story I doubt any of you charge $30K worth of gas to get your 5%. But I do bet 95% of you carry a balance on your card. A lot of good rebate will do.

After the holiday's, discover is getting shredded. They got $100 from me and that is all they will ever get!! Screw-em

Cash baby!!!

Find me one that gives me 5% back on everything, not just a few piddly dollars in gas every week, and Ill get it. I can save more money by keeping my foot out of the gas pedal.

The GM card gives you back 5% on every purchase towards a new GM vehicle. That saves you some money. But when they top if off to a total of a $3000 rebate, thats when your head spins. Thats a 12.5% return on my spendings in my case. Negotiate the lowest price on your GM car then whip out your GM card and get $3000 more off on that. How much gas do you have to buy to get $3000 off? Oh yeah, about $60,000 of gas.

The GM Card has the 5% credit toward a new GM vehicle on all purchases, not just gas. They have reduced the size of the annual and maximum benefits you can accrue, but will occasionally throw extra dollars into the pot temporarily to induce you to buy a new car.

I have had one of these cards. In 1996, we cashed in about $3300 to buy my mother a new car, and in 2003 cashed in around $5200 to get a new pick-up.

It is fairly easy these days to use a card for necessities, such as groceries, and to pay other recurring monthly bills, such as cable TV, cellphone, etc. Some colleges even take them for tuition. If you are going to spend the money anyway, why not?

That's about where I am on credit card use. I take my kickback in the form of airline tickets. Still amounts to about 1%. I'm goimg to change card tho, I found one that looks more generous.
