Best filter for $6 or under

SuperTech for $1.98 at Wal-Mart. Made by Champion and virtually identical to the more expensive Bosch. Unlike others here, I happen to prefer a 20 micron filter. The SuperTech is 98% effective at 20 micron, and a 20 micron filter will not clog or restrict the flow as much as a 10 or 15 micron filter will. After having used a PureOne, I can tell the difference in how fast the oil gets to the lifters on a cold morning with the SuperTech.

I'm the same as you, I prefer a filter that is around 20 microns. Which is why I like the K&N so much, it is very well built, very strong, filters out pretty good (but not too good!) and flows a ton of oil. With all the good stuff I've been saying about them lately, it's time for K&N to send me some free stuff! (A t-shirt perhaps?)

It's just too bad it's not under $6 though.

My vote then goes to the Bosch Premium (which we don't have up here but if we did I would probably use it)

I personally like the Wix filters and their sisters Napa Gold and Carquest premium. The AC Delco Duraguards are a pretty good filter also and you can buy two of them for under $6--for that matter you can buy three Super Techs for under six bucks.

i use the AC delco pf-58, i have heard the delcos are pretty decent oil filters... id rather save that money then spend 11 on the mobil 1

Actually the best filter I used to be able to get under $5 was the Castrol MaxPro Plus for $4.50 at K-Mart......but ours is not carrying these any longer.

Easy.

First - Mann oil filters. Well constructed, plenty of surface area, good anti-drain back valve. Under $4.00

Second - Amsoil SDF oil filters and yes a bit over $6 at $7(dealer price). Well constructed. Strong. Excellent by-pass mechanism.

EDIT - IF (big IF) I find out the Hastings LF490 ($5) is exactly the same as an Amsoil SDF-42, then I have a new winner.

After a couple of weeks of research, I have made my decision. After talking with Champion Labs this morning about several brand name filters they make I will be going with the Bosch Premium #3423 for my 5.3L Chevy. It is 98% efficient at 15 microns on first pass and 93% efficient at 15 microns on multi-pass.
there are better filters out there, but the Bosch gives you the most bang for the buck in a standard duty filter. For racing the K&N would be good. If you want a heavy duty filter the Mobil 1 would be the better choice.
Hope this helps anyone trying to make a decision on what filter to use.

I'd like to know what they said about other filters they make, too--specifically the SuperTech.

Bets are off on the Hasting LF490 being the same (an inexpensive replacement) as Amsoil SDF-42.

LF-490 is obsolete and there is no replacement.

Hmmmmmm...........

I'll keep my money on the SDF-15 as the best for my car.

Interesting info! Thanks for doing the leg work for us!

I do wonder though, it was recently posted on here that the K&N oil filter is 90% efficient on the multipass test, at 10 microns. But the Bosch Premium is 93% in the same test but at 15 microns. So it would seem to appear that the K&N might filter out more smaller particles. Unless K&N quoted their multipass numbers slightly wrong, as perhaps that 90% efficiency is not specifically at 10 microns, but for particles in the 10-20 micron range.

I truly wish that all oil filter makers would be forced to publish their technical data, and all the exact same way too.

XHVI,

What Champion Labs told me about the Super Tech filter was that it is a standard duty quality filter that Wal-mart contacted for them to manufacture so they could set their own pricing.
He said that it is 98% efficient at 20 microns. Not bad for $2.00 filter. He did state that it was not intented for use in extended drain intravals. Basically, a 3000 mile/6 month filter. But for $2.00 each you could change it every 2 months for the price of a Mobil 1 and others.

Like some of the other posts her.........can you tell us what information you received from CL and how you arrived at your decision?? Thank you !!

Alex D

Here are the results of my conversation with Champion labs.
Bosch Premium - 98% @ 15 micron first pass
93% @ 15 micron multi-pass

Mobil 1 - 98% @ 10 micron first pass
95% @ 10 micron multi-pass

Super Tech - 98% @ 20 micron first pass

K&N - 90% @ 10 microns multi-pass
