Probably not the type of engine you're looking for though!

K20 from s2000? Lol

90-02 F22 , F23 honda accord/prelude engine for their reliability, smoothness, straightforward design. I believe it was listed on wards best engines.

Ford Model T 4 cyl. Got more people out of horse & buggies and into cars. Everything since then has been evolutionary.

They also used a bunch of those Ford engines in sawmills, farm tractors, etc. Sometimes they'd just park an old "T" and run a belt off one wheel rim like a redneck PTO.

The 1.6 and 1.8 Vauxhall 8v engines circa the 80's and early 90's.

Bottom ends were nigh on indestructible and they were non interference so you could just drive it till the belt snapped.

The 1.6 would do 40mpg easily in the Cavalier of the day with the 1.8 not far behind.

Pity Vauxhall engines since then haven't been as reliable or economical.

Close second is the Rover V8, an all alloy Buick lump that was unpopular in the US so the rights were bought.

3.5, 3.9 and 4.0 versions were also made.

Has been in almost everything from vans to sportcars to GT 40 kitcars.

I'd vote for the Ford 2.3L SOHC engine produced from 1974-1993. Later versions were not as durable (1994-2001). There is a reason there are several companies making high performance parts for these engines and they are commonly used on dirt tracks.

+1 on the Ford 300 I-6 and I would add the Jeep 4.0 I-6 as well.
Ford Coyote 5.0 is truly remarkable but its too soon to tell about life.
