Hey guys, recently I've been using Mobil 1 10w30 in my 98 Nissan Frontier because of suggestions by Molakule. It is a great oil and I've gotten good numbers from it. I know the KA24DE is an oil smasher but I was wondering if I could use a good dino or even a cheaper syn and change at 3k intervals and still get good numbers. My brother works for Conoco/Phillips and keeps telling me to put in Motorcraft 10w30 or Kendall 10w30..but I'm not sure. Any help is appreciated, thanks guys!

I have the 2000 Frontier in the 4 cyl. I just change the oil every 3333 or so miles and not worry about it. I like Chevron and Havoline. Have used Shell and Exxon.

Hey Gumby84, Welcome to Bobistheoilguy!

The motorcraft is a very good synthetic blend. In your climate, 10w30 should work perfectly year around. Even 5w30 would work just as well.

Chevron, Havoline, Pennzoil are good as well based on from UOA numbers. I like Amsoil on a personal preference. Anyone of those oils should work great in your Nissan,,,,,,,AR

I don't believe your brother's steering you wrong. As far as conventional oils go, also add to the list the other usual suspects:

Pennzoil
Castrol GTX
Chevron Supreme
Havoline
Mobil Drive Clean

The order of listing is NOT intended as a quality guide - just the order I thunk 'em. If your brother can get you the ConocoPhillips products at a discount, your decision's a no-brainer. (The ConocoPhillips products in 10W-30 viscosity will be reformulated and actually listed on the bottles' front labeling as synthetic blends no later than next spring. If the MSDSs for the already reformulated 5W-20 and 5W-30 ConocoPhillips motor oils hold true for the upcoming change in their 10W-30 motor oils, my read suggests strongly that it'll be a Group III/Group II mix - strong on Group III content (>50%). Sounds like good stuff for about $1.50/qt. In the meantime, the current SL and SM 10W-30 ConocoPhillips motor oils are probably very good Group IIs)

Thanks for the replies guys. My decision to go to dino or a cheaper syn is strictly based on price. The KA24DE does not like 5w30 for some reason so it needs to be at least a 10w30. I'll probably be going with the motorcraft 10w30 or the chevron supreme 10w30, how much do these cost a quart these days?

I am using Kendall GT-1 synthetic (10w-30) and the truck seems to run very well with it. The numbers posted seem to suggest that Kendall is a good oil.

According to their web site, dino Kendall 10w-30 has some very good numbers: meets the GM light truck low temp pumpability standard (GM 6094); flash point of 435 degrees F; pour point of minus 49 degrees F; HT/HS of 3.1; and TBN of 6.9 (no extended OCI, I guess).

Seems like an good, solid oil to me. What say the rest of you?

Bob W.

Gumby84, by an oil smasher I assume you mean there is a problem of shearing. if so you need to look for a decent HT/HS spec. if you want to stay with a 30wt and move to dino Id look at PENN. HM 10/30. if you want to stick with M1 mix 70% 5/30 with 30% 15/50.

I don't care what engine you have, any oil can go over 4000miles before even becoming close to needing a change.

Don't waste resources.

I just got back some great UOA results from Havoline 10w30 in our Chevy 2.2L. It did shear down to just inside 20W land in a 3500 mile interval, but the wear metals were truly impressive.

I own a 94 altima with 130K miles on it. Stick with a 10w-30 grade over a 5w-30. My UOAs on 10w-30 were better than 5w-30. The engine is an oil abuser but very reliable.

Motorcraft 10W-30 PCMO $1.42 (WalMart).

Chevron/Havoline was 20 or 30 cents cheaper last I looked.

I would not use any "Energy Conserving" Dino Oil in a high shear engine.

If you can get the Motorcraft 10W-30 (HDEO) for the new 6.0 Powerstroke Diesel it would be a good alternative to synthetic.

Any 10W-30 HDEO Dino would be a good lower priced alternative to Synthetic 10W-30 PCMO.

Another option would be Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 with 6,000-10,000 mi changes (depending on driving habits). $12.88 Gal at WalMart.
