Regarding pads, I've used the BrakeBest Select on previous cars, and they've been fine. I used to drive P/T for them, so the discount was nice (No allegiance... just a job).

The one brand of pads that my mechanic stays away from (and is quite vocal) are Wagner.

one think I know about mechanic, mabe not all mechanic, but mostly the one I take too, are alway use cheap stuff and charge for premium price. like this mechanic i take too to change out my rear diff seal. when time to fill gear oil back in, he just grap 3-4 old gear oil bottle , different brand and weight, and mix them together, and charge me price of each bottle, I was going to change out the gear oil anyway, so I dint say nothing.

This is a very correct observation. Most mechanics charge double the price of what the auto part store charge them, basically making a nice profit for no work done. I know this because I have access to an mechanic account with AAP and can get things at that price, which is not much different than the regular customer price. However, the receipt will show what the mechanics will charge the customers and that has always been exactly double. I based this on 30 plus parts I had ordered under this mechanic account when I had things done to my Accord and Corolla by a mechanic friend too far away for me to take my car to for a simple brake job.

I'm fortunate to be have a mechanic that lets me bring in my own parts for everything, then just charges labor rates. We were 'softball buddies' prior to this arrangement, so it works well... I get to sit and watch him, so I get to learn on the fly.
