Hi,
I'm searching the best 5w-50 sintethic oil I could use in my turbo high hp engine for fast road/mountain/track use.
Unfortunately Motul doesn't cover this range.
Any idea?
Mobil1 rally 5w-50?
Thanks a lot

Roush Racing Valvoline 5w-50, one of Amsoils products, Redline, not sure what the selection is like over there...

Amsoil or Redline! I have only experience with the Amsoil, but I have read here the Redline is very good stuff too!

Third choice would be Mobil-1

Syntec 5w-50.

Not sure if it's good or bad, but at least it's easily obtainable.

My appologies, I thought they did, I went to the website and it was a 5w40 I was thinking of. Thanks for pointing that out!

Is there any attachment to 5W-50? Opening up the viscosity will yield a lot more choices.

OT: I have never understood why there is a 5W-50 for high performance apps. Seems like it would be really prone to viscosity breakdown. But I know squat....

For example what range were you thinking about?

Basically my engine has to run with 10w 40, but a 5w will give me less wear at start up, where I have very high oil pressure/low flow.
And turning from 40 to 50 at hot is because this engine is giving out 2.5x the stock power, so it works hotter and oil has definitely more heat to dissipate.
Obviously OCI will be shorter.

Thanks!

Thanks people, will look at every single oil you adviced me!

BTW, is it possible that i'm not finding one single ester based 5w 50 ?? Thank you

I would consider Mobil's 5W-50. We don't have such a product on this side of the pond (in U.S. anyways) but I've read many great comments about it from the Europeans.

Mmmm...looking better at this oil, I found it has low HTHS (4.2), too thick at cold ( 104 @ 40deg ) and too thin at hot ( 17.5 @ 100 deg ), compared to other oils:
i saw that a 300V 5w-40 is hths 4.51, 80 @ 40deg and 14 @ 100deg!

Am i right ?

Thanks!

Mobil 1 5W-50 is available in Canada and seems to be popular with euro cars crowd my brother uses it in his BMW 530 I think in EU it goes by 'Rally Formula' Certified by top auto makers may be worth a try

Hi,
I was in your same situation some years ago, having upgraded my oil pump with the WRC one:
it ended the 300V 5w-40 to be the best choice for my need, lowest viscosity at 40 C for the higher possible HTHS value.
5w-50 are way too viscous at 40 C.

Brand - type - cSt @ 40 C - cSt @ 100 C - HTHS

Schaeffer 9000 5w-40 * 85-89 13,50-15,75 4,5

Motul 300V 5w-40 * 80,8 13,8 4,51
300V 10w-40 * 89,5 14.0 4,2
300V 15w-50 * 128,1 17,8 5,33

Redline 5w-40 * 94.0 15,1 4,6
10w-40 * 93.0 14,6 4,7

Mobil1 0w-40 * 78,3 14.0 3,7
5w-40 * 83.0 14.0 3,6
5w-50 * 104,6 17,4 4,3

Silkolene Pro S 5w-40 * 92,4 14,9

Amsoil 5w-40 * 79,7 13,7 3,7
10w-40 * 90,5 14,6 4,3

Elf HTX 5w-50 * 117.0 19,3 4,6

Total Quartz 5w-40 * 82,3 13,6

Sounds like a good choice to me.
BTW, what sort of HP and maximum oil temperatures are you getting?

500 bhp and around 130 deg C in track
Please consider that engine is forged and oil turns dark in 30 minutes for its blowby,so my OCI are very short,1000 miles

Thanks
