I have just bought a 2006 VW Jetta 2.5. The manual says that a full oil change will go 6.3 quarts and needs to stay in there for 10k.
I was wondering about oils to use for my new Jetta. I was thinking about Using:

Redline 5W-40
Amsoil 5W-40
Pentosin 5W-40
Motul 5W-40

Which one is the best?

i have heard excellant stuff about the M1 T&SUV 5w40. for the most part it is readily available at walmart for $21/5qt jug. i am considering using it in my neon. its just another option to consider. im sure the others are great oils that will last the 10000 miles.

shoot i forgot about the vw spec. a bottle of the mobil 1 5w40 does not specifically say it meets the spec, so i guess that is out of the options. sorry for the misinformation.

none of the US cars say 504/507, only 502

Just making sure! Those spec changes usually sneak up on us and because almost nobody tells us voluntarily what it says in the manual, I feel it's better to ask. Still, if you find a VW 504/507 oil, you may use it, as this spec supersedes VW 502. Personally, I'd go with a VW 502 oil.

The 2.5 VW is a n/a inline 5-banger, right? I'd say any VW 502-rated oil will be fine. Consider Elf.

How about Castrol Syntec 5W-40?
It meets VW 502 00 and VW 505 00 and claims to be engineered specifically to meet the VW engine warranty requirements.

I'm pretty sure the manual doesn't say you 'need' to keep the oil in for 10k.

If you want to stick with an oil that's 502 approved you have lose the Redline and Amsoil. If you don't care about 502 approval, I'd run Redline.

If the Motul is the 8110 X-cess, then I'd run Pent.

I think you should go off the board and run GC, especially for NEPA winters.

The 'best' isn't on your list, which means you haven't yet been inducted into the boutique oil snob club.

As a card carrying BOSC member, I feel the need to encourage you to run Motul E-Tech 8100 0w-40, also 502 approved.

Consider Elf.

You will need an LL oil as you rack up the miles trying to locate the stuff. 8) Actually I was going to suggest it.

Oddly, I went to a bulk oil dealer in RI (warehouse was 100's of feet long with mostly Delo and Rotella) and they had a little rack of Excellium LDX in the showroom.

I guess I am looking for an oil which is also long-life rated as well. What is the difference between 502 / 504 anyway?

In short, I guess my list includes:
1. 502 approval

2. LLF approval

3. High Ester content

VW 504/507 are Mid-SAPS (low sulfated ash -- environmentally more friendly) oils and were designded for the latest VW and Audi engines. However, it appears that US import models are not implementing all the emissions features current Euro models have. Therefore VW 502 is the correct spec for US import gassers. You may use VW 504/507 oil if you can find it.

VW 502 is an extended drain spec, but not for as extended drains as VW 503.01, which you can also use, since all oils that meet VW 503.01 meet also VW 502.

If VW approval and ester content make or break the deal, I guess your choices come down to GC, Motul or Elf.

Elf oil is available from Champagne Motors in Colorado Springs.

What does the manual say? We're all dying here!

The North American manual should specify a 502.00 with a viscosity of 5W-40. Whether a picture of the manual recommendation gets posted on this forum remains to be seen.

My recommendation for the best 5W-40 (and quite possibly the best oil on the planet... sorry Pscholte) is Mobil-1 T&S 5W-40. I hate the name they chose but I love the product.

On a side note, I order my Elf oil from Elfusa. They have a cheesy web page but if you're looking for their product you can find it there. They have a sale on the 5 liter jugs of DID 5W-40 at the moment.

I second the Syntec 5W40 recommendation. That will suffice nicely in the non turbo 2.5l motor.

Nice car!

I suppose if you ignore these:

Redline 5W-40
Amsoil 5W-40
Pentosin 5W-40
Motul 5W-40,

M1 is best.

I would say as a group they are all good. How any will do in that new motor remains to be seen.
