I get a chuckle out of people blaming the "steel".

Steel for automotive bodies has changed little over the past five decades or more. What has changed is the paint, e-coat, metallic coatings, phosphate treatments, and general surface prep of the steel. This is what varies between makes, models, and even production runs.

Agreed. If anything, the sheet steel has gotten thinner, and harder to perform major repair upon. But the production quality is no better now than it was 40 years ago.

PDR guys would have heart attacks if they had to work body panels from the 50's and '60s all day long.

The coating and drainage improvements are what have transformed the corrosion issue.

Was there ever a car manufactured that rusted faster than a 69 roadrunner or a 71 Vega? I think my Vega came "pre-rusted"

Yeah, but at least it had a reliable aluminum engine without the extra weight of iron cylinder liners...

The Vega was the vehicle whos legacy is one of rusting while on the showroom floor, that's for shoor

Is it really necessary to was your car to keep it from rusting? Or, is simply washing it and keeping it clean enough?

Speaking about rust - One thing I noticed in the midwest (Northeast Iowa)... Never saw one import as everyone drove a Chevy or Ford. During the winter of 2004 we had a few ice storms. Went in the ditch for the first time on a road as slick as glass... I see now how road salt is a nice thing to have.

May no imports because all the local car dealerships sold nothing but chevy/ford... ???

Like that in any rural setting. 10 years ago, I almost took a job in Montana and remembering that I almost sold my Isuzu pickup because there was only one dealer in the whole state. Even then, it was still a 5-6 hour drive.
