Hello All,

Know nothing about coolant. Recently got a 2003 Dodge Durango TR (5.9L) with 88,600 miles. Not sure when coolant was last changed so I was going to have it done locally (short on time to do it myself). The place uses a machine to do it and uses "Be Cool" coolant. They say it is universal, etc.

Is this coolant any good?

Really appreciate all the help.

Best,

Tim

Im not a fan of "universal" anything. My suggestion is to buy Mopar coolant...its not expensive and you know its top tier stuff. I would MC from Ford, Delco from GM etc.

Ive seen way to many "universals" cause problems when mixed with Dexcool and VWs blue stuff for me to use it.

I hate to say it but the only fluid that i buy thats not OEM is washer solvent and engine oil...YMMV

Since you don't know what type of coolant was in there, I'd go with a factory fill figuring it's possibly original coolant.

That is exactly what I was leaning towards...just wanted to see if "Be Cool" coolant may be a better way to go. Will have to find another place or will do it myself. Thanks guys.

"Be Cool" engine coolant is a product of the Be Cool radiator company, which makes a lot of all-aluminum radiators for classic, antique, and performance vehicles.

They seem to think it's the bee's knees, because they extend the warranty on your Be Cool radiator if you use their coolant.

That stuff is not cheap, last I checked.

Performance? Don't know.

Probably just a dex clone. If they got all the old coolant out with a flush and the only thing in the system is be cool I wouldn't worry about it. The last thing you want to do is a half way flush and mix in an incompatible coolant.

The oem coolant is no good if it's mixed wrong. I wouldn't worry about it

So, would you guys run it in your car? This Durango is a third car (tow car for the motorhome). Is in great condition...just want to keep it going. Not sure when coolant was done...so wanted something quick and expedient...but not to the detriment of the car's health.

Also, I highly doubt the claim of 300k miles between services.

I'm not a fan of using PG is a system with a non-pressurized reservoir. Air and heat cause PG to oxidize. Biological growth in the system exacerbates this problem leading to acidity and serious corrosion.

They might have a chemical package worked out that inhibits this, but I'd keep a close eye on this, regardless. Lot of PG use in marine, and those systems need to be watched closely.

300k miles? Very doubtful.

Proper PG should be clear. Discoloration is a dead giveaway that it needs to be dumped and flushed.

Not sure about the coolant but they make some good radiators. Lots of classic cars and performance cars are running them as was mentioned earlier. I wouldnt think they would cheap out putting their name on junk.

Yo mbacfp, Out with the old. In with the new after a chemical flush if necessary.

Use the Mopar red as it is the favored color-to-find-in-the-reservoir by Mopar freaks should one ever want to buy your vehicle.

Spoke with a couple local shops and they all use a Universal type coolant...is this the new trend? Completely new to all this...just curious. Thanks.

Always G-05 for those mopars. It's the factory fill. Good for 100k miles. I just flushed and filled DIL's minivan. Some yahoo put amam green in it. I used 2 gallons of Zerox G-05 and 5 gallons of distilled water. With that mileage on your truck, it's probably the original FF. If the AF is pink or yellow, it's G-05, If green or orange it's not. Good luck with your truck.

Will have to take a look. Truck has 88,600 miles. They replaced water pump and thermostat at 40kish...asumming coolant changed at that time as well.

Not new. The universal all makes/models are the most common AF sold in parts stores and Walmart. Basically they are dexclone OAT AFs. Meaning, non proprietary DexCool and also containing 2eha. So without seeing a spec sheet be my guess the topic'd AF is some form of that type AF.

Looks like your year and model specs G05 AF, readily available in concentrate and relatively reasonably priced. See 440Magnum post prior for purchase options. That's what I'd go with here.
