I went to do the 1st 30k PSF flush on the Accord. Normally, I have no issues just filling the reservior while the return goes into a drain. Well, even with a lil running dry/foaming....never really a problem. So when my 2.4 went berzerk, squealing really loud, I thought I had screwed-up the pump with my flushing activities.

I had no choice to let it run for a minute, even thinking about taking the burp bolt out. Since I'm under warranty, I did not want to mess with it any further. I turned it off and looked at it further....the reservior is mounted lower than the pump, so it was indeed running dry. If I just unmounted the reservior and held it up higher, the dry-lock would not have occured. Anyway, it's running fine now, I'll just have to re-do the fluid again in case the pump shed any particles. Lesson learned.

Thanks. You reminded me I have to have that done. I've yet to flush it and I'm now at 107k miles.

I usually just baster drain the reservoir and refill one a year or ~ 15,000 miles. I never had a problem and most cars sold at 125,000 + miles. If the pump was squealing I'm sure some damage was done.

Never changed the fluid in my 1997 Monte Carlo until the seal on the pump started to leak at 170K miles. I did flush it then just for good measure but in 170K miles never had a problem.

I've gone over 125,000 miles on cars with zero power steering maintance. I think 15k drain and refills is probably prettty good however. If a flush is easy, do it, but if not then what you're doing is fine and what I normally do.
