PAO is made (synethesized, aka build up) from ethylene gas which can come from crude oil, natural gas or any hydrocarbon source. Crude oil is currently the lowest cost source. This does NOT mean PAO is refined from crude.
Esters (within group 5) can be built the same way. Some esters do start life in plant or animal sources.
