Base Oil Viscosity Discussion Thread

I would be all for Bruce coming up with a system like this. This is a dream come true if we could get it to happen. So what if it is a little more expensive than the average synthetic OTC oil. To be able to plug in certain criteria, desired protection, and mileage driven before OCI's, would be the cat's meow to all of us oil nerds on BITOG!!!

Paging Bruce....

just start out with 1 oil, whatever would be most popular. probably a 10w30. just one oil for now that has a viscosity and add pack to suit most people here. lets face it most of us can run a 10w30 for most of the year. this would be easier to get our feet wet.

I really doubt he is going take the time to make a special batch of run of the mill 3K dino. You can go to Walmart and get Supertech for that, at probably a third of what Bruce would have to charge you.

True, but Bruce's will have more zddp.

But Master ACiD has the right idea, start with one all purpose oil.

Maybe he could just sell raw base stocks and raw additives separately and let the end user blend it up. Imagine the blender's delight that would cause??

He could then write a blender's primer titled :"Home PCMO Blending for Dummies" ..sit back and watch the fun begin.

Maybe Bruce would sell us his own Top Secret 10w30...the stuff he runs in his cars...we could test it...and then stick a BITOG certified sticker on the label if it meets our harsh standards...

I run "stock" 10/30 or 15w40 whatever Is being blended when I need some, OCI is ?? 10-20K whenever I think about it
used oil analysis only 1 time in over 100K.

Talking with G-Man this about sums it up I think.

"keep this low key and just make a post saying that you would be willing to consider blending a single grade for private "testing" and people can send you a PM if you're interested."

Yup, that's the best way. No "official" BITOG involvement.

And please, if you use some of Bruce's oil do post VOAs and used oil analysis so we can all benefit from the "testing."

Some times PAO or GPIII or GPII I use whatever is around when needed but no x/20 even tho we blend to the high end think they are to thin.

bruce, I'm surprised you still think they are too thin with all the good 5w-20 used oil analysis.

So Bruce you are saying that your oci's are 10 to 20k? What type of driving? I am running a GRP III 5w30 and am at 5000 miles. Just dying to get it out of there! But at the same time thinking of pushing it a bit longer!

""oci's are 10 to 20k?"'

Yeah I know better and I do not recomend this long OCI I'm just lazy or forgetful or strapped for time to do Oil changes take you pick.

even tho I have never had a oil related problems in any of my cars or trucks with >200K miles on them. goes to show that you do not have to stress out about 5ppm iron or whatever.

Kinda like the painter whose house always needs paint or the gardener whose lawn is full of weeds, I always forget to chnge out oil and do not worry about it just keep it full on dipstick and be happy.

Guess I shouldn't worry about changing the Aerostar 3.0's oil. It gets a quart of makeup ever 1300 miles, so there is plenty of fresh oil going into that thing. Probably could run 10K easily. Would be two years OCI.
