Would it be possible to use the base oil group as a rough guide to time of use? For example group 1 use for 2-3 months max, group 2 use for 6 months max, group 3 use for 1 yr. max, group 4/5 possible useage 1yr.+ up to about 2-3 yrs. max. Yes add pack is important, as is the total product, but adds generally compensate for the bad things of the base oil so even they vary with the base oil.

Yep.

Add to that type of vehicle, type of engine, climate, even your terrain. Lots of variables but mileage and type of driving are far more important than time.

True, true but you can assign a mileage of perhaps 1k a month if you want. Some would say drive 2-3 k miles a month highway and would say these are easier miles, but it takes a lot of fuel to drive a lot of miles and therefore the time of usage maybe helpful in keep the OCI's low enough to maintain the oil's functionality. Once the oil is exposed to certain contaminants it's on the clock as far as changing to a non usuable liquid, and even boiling off water/stuff does help but it's not a cure.

well said.

you have brought up a good question...oils which are primary made of group V such as Motul, Red Line, Royal Purple do not recommend 25-35K miles OCI's, where as Amsoil does which is not entirely a group V oil....

I wonder if anyone can explain that? becoz of additive package perhaps?
