I'm thinking of using Baldwin oil filters instead of the OEM Kawasaki, but I can't find any specs on them to see what the micron rating is. The only thing I can find is the pressure at which the bypass valve opens.

If you want the best micron rated filters the Fram Ultras are supposed to now be tested at 99.9% efficient at 20 microns and 80% @5 microns. The filters you want for your model are XG3614 if you have a tight spot or XG3600 if you have room for it to hang out.

Baldwin filters are solid built but not high efficiency, I've seen beta ratios in the past showing 50% @20 microns.

Which one is the orange can of death everyone says to avoid with the cardboard endcaps?

Does fram make good filters other than the orange one they always talk about being made out of card board?

Yes lol I'm sure you know this by now don't you? The Fram Ultra is a top of the line filter and the specs are unsurpassed currently based on filtration. The Ultra uses deep steel end caps to secure the dual layer of synthetic media with the steel screen.

Also the fear of fiber end caps should really die since many manufacturers are using fiber, resin sonic welding or no end caps at all. As long as the seal is good it the end caps doing its job, fiber against nitrile is actually a better seal than steel+nitrile

A lot of people do, but anyone I've met in person who has this phobia can't tell me what the job of the end cap is.

Welcome to 2016! Fram Ultra is a solid filter. If you want metal endcaps, the XG3614 has it. Google "Fram XG3614 cut open" and see for yourself. It's also on sale at Walmart for $6.28.

Stay with your gut. Youve been making a wise choice all along. Avoid the agenda driven advice around here is my advice.
There are many good filters. I think motorcraft is about the best bang for the buck as its a good filter that will last as long as your vehicles suggested oci no problem and is priced very well.
If you are inclined to extend your ocis past 10k then you might think about one of the premium filters like m1 or royal purple or napa platinum or somthing.even the fram ultra is fine for over 10k. Thats the only fram filter i would use though.
Or if you care to run multiple ocis on a single filter, those premiums are a good option.

That's awful advice because the Fram Tough Guard is one of the best bang for the buck and it uses fiber end caps, silicone adbv and glass blended media along with 99% efficiency at 20 microns

Basically there's multiple ways to engineer a filter, depending on many factors so they must make sure the end product works together. Fiber caps work, but not with micro glass media for instance, so many things must be considered.

I would say a lot comes from the marketing department, mostly from old school Wix where they based into the brains of now old timers that metal was superior and marketing knows that's what the customer "wants".

Yes that is true, for instance i found a link from another member posting this efficiency they emailed him about.

For the BT223 they sent me...

Their efficiency numbers are fine, to me, what is shown here. I was looking into buying a couple, too hard to do, shipping cost, etc. Then there was a 20 psi bypass spec when Toyota has 14. So I will spend my $10-15 per year on Fram Ultras. WM had the XG3614 for under $7. Bypass is like OE spec. They publish efficiency data and the test used, they have two ply synthetic media, they have stainless steel mesh screening. So even though I tried to spend $10-15 on a USA owned company and product, I settle now for a USA made product, not owned. Close enough.
