Baldwin filter early anti-drainback failure

Anything to look for if I cut open this filter relating to a potentially failed anti-drainback valve? Gonna check for metal deposits as well.

I bought a case of Baldwin B2 filters for my Jeep with the 4.0L. The current filter was on its second oil change of Pennzoil Euro 0w40, about 6k miles total on the filter. Started hearing bad valvetrain noises on cold start ups that I hadn't heard before with oil pressure taking a couple seconds to build.. problem compounded since I've been remote starting the majority of winter so I'm not sure how long it's been happening. Warm starts, no noise. Not low on oil, great oil pressure on this low mile 4.0.

Filter adapter is clocked on the block so the filter is mostly horizontal, slight angle down and able to run a larger than stock filter, hence a B2 or a Motorcraft PL1A is on all my Jeeps over the years.

Switched the filter out with a Bosch 3500 DistancePlus filter, added the make up and no more noise. The Bosch doesn't have nearly as good micron ratings as the Baldwin unfortunately.

I guess I expected better from Baldwin.
 
I’m confused, the thread title sounds like it failed, but the thread body sounds like you just think it failed.
Can only convey so much in a title!

I assuming it failed given cold starts act like all my oil drained back into the sump. But I'm asking if there's something I should look for when I cut it apart.

I put the main question at the start so people didn't have to read my story time, but gave the extra info after since those are things I'd assume people would ask.

A question mark in the title would make it pretty clear in my opinion. I suspect I am not the only one that thought that when first seeing the thread title. But all good, you do you.

Anyway on to how would you tell? I would cut it open and look for signs that it either hardened, or maybe has a tear, etc.
 
Years ago I worked at a parts store that sold Hastings filters, which are (were) made by Baldwin; only difference was the numbering and what color they painted the can. Obviously wanted to use what the store stocked; had a 1999 Ford Escort, and with a Hastings on it it would hammer on cold start. Started using a MC FL400S with a silicone valve, no noise. Went back and forth between the two and found it would always make noise with the Hastings, so stopped using them.

Congratulations on the oil filter
maybe you would like heat out the vent quicker, if your coolant is fresh, adding Amsoil Coolant Boost really works well heating up the coolant. Quicker heat out the vents . As an inhibitor it seems to do well with heat transfer
 
It’s a common failure. I’ve had multiple stupid expensive PPE oil filters that effectively had no functional anti drain back valve. It was there…but it didn’t prevent flow at all.


I’m surprised more people don’t at least try to blow air backwards through the filter to see if it works at all.
