It would not be a waste of time for the exposed steel in the trailer, but the tires don't care.

I must be thinking about larger trailers and tires than this discussion, but I've used and seen plenty of auto tires/wheels used with these. A common one is the Motor Wheel made mid 60's-80's chrome Buick road wheel
