All of us who have once been 17 and learning to work on cars can sympathize with the kid. For that matter, you don't have to be 17 to have something like this happen.

Don't people wipe the filter mounting area with a paper towel to clean off any dirt, etc. One should feel the old gasket even if one cannot see it. But double checking the old filter for a gasket is also a good idea.
I also had a defective filter once, so I always look at the gasket and then look across the bottom of the filter to make sure its not warped.
Do I think if someone dropped a filter at Walmart and dented it would they just put the filter back on the shelf?

Been there,done that.I was lucky after starting the engine I heard a loud pooff and saw oil gushing around the filter and the mounting area.At first I thought the filter seam broke, but it was a double gasket.What a mess!Thats' the first and last time that will happen to me and that poor kid.
