Apparently I am not allowed to own ANY vehicle with a crack free windshield! Anyone else?

I give up. It is just a fact of life in this household. I honestly can not recall the last time we had no chips or cracks in the wife's or my vehicle windshields. The brand new SUV we got in Oct 2025 already has it's "break in chip!" Ugh. Vehicle has about 2600mi on it and has not been driven further than about 35 miles from the house a few time. The other day I and one of my brothers from another mother went out to eat lunch. We are driving around in the SUV and I jinxed myself. I was telling him about one of the things they tried to add/on at signing (actually the only one).
First time I have ever been offered "windshield protection insurance." They must spy one me!? Anyway after lunch and dropping him off I had about an 8 mile ride back home on a fine sunny day with almost zero traffic on US61. I am cruising along admiring the day and I hear what sounds like a gun shot that scared the stuff out of me. I looked around. No cars in front , no vehicles behind me and none on the opposite lanes.
Ok. I get home and when I go to get out. SURPRISE! I now have a dime size crack right in front of the driver side (thankfully) only a couple inched from the cowl so it is not a vision problem. I did what we have been doing for years. Went straight to one of my tool cabinets where I keep my bottle of clear fingernail polish donated for just such things by the BOSS. We usually clean off the chip/crack and let it dry well and then coat it with clear polish to seal it. Then I take excess off with a razor a few days after it is set well. 99% of the chips / cracks I have done this to have not spread.
I was so angry at first I was gonna call the pros at Safelite who I have used in the past to replace one. They offer a so called repair service. I canned that idea when they emailed me an estimate of nearly $300. Oh well. The new SUV now matches the wife's car that has an almost identical chip in the same spot.

I often dream of windshield warranty. Actually I think I can add windshield protection to my full coverage insurance on the Ford but we know how that might increases the premium. I've bought a lot of Oreilly's windshield repair kits that's for sure.

EDIT: Quick story: When we had a 1998 E-150 there was a dually truck flying down the road at probably 85 MPH & as they passed threw a rock that chipped the windshield. It was extremely cold outside so we naturally had the heater on. I had to turn on the defrost so the hot air was pumping towards the windscreen & the chip turned into a spider in just a split second. I was not happy...lol

Kinda the same. Except mine is hail dents.

Bought my Ranger brand new in Feb 2020. In May we were on vacation in Gulf Shores, parked in a parking garage. Freak storm blew through and blew hail in sideways to get almost the whole truck dented.

Fast forward to Summer of 2025, Brand new F150 on a once in a lifetime camping trip to South Dakota.

Tiny afternoon severe storm blows through and catches us with nowhere to go.

Not as many as the dents as the Ranger had, but still. Bigtime PO'ed....

Today's windshields are so weak, they try to save weight and money , the glass is just plain trash. I get a broken one about once per year. My 2002 Honda S2000 didn't have any hint of damage, and that windshield sat almost 90 degrees to the road. It was built at a time when quality meant something.

My BMW is part of the cracked windshield club. This car is a rock magnet! Also, this year, my BMW got 2 warped wheels thanks to the world's worst road paving crew leaving a pothole the size of a moon crater. This BMW will be my last "nice" car, because my commute to work will beat the crap out of any vehicle. There are two rock quarries between my house and my office and always gravel in the road that falls from the dump trucks.

I had the same thing happen on my new Mazda3. Stupid truck in Texas....pi__ed me off!! Only 2000 miles and got in dime size ding but on the passenger side about 1/3 the way up. Safelite fixed it for 75.00. They inject a resin and then cure it with an ultra violet light. Took less than a half an hour. The repair left only a slight pencil tip size nick in the glass (under the repair). Anyone not knowing it was there would not see it.

Sorry Sammy. Total bummer.

I remember the first new car I bought. VW Super Beetle. A couple days in the windshield got hit. It was the new curved glass super beetle. First shipment in. No glass available anywhere in the USA. Had to wait weeks to get a new glass.

Couldn't find anything but today wife reports a crack near the cowl on passenger side🤬

The last one I had hit under the wiper blade, didn't notice it until the crack showed up above the wiper. I was ready to go back to the dealer and insist it be fixed under warranty as a stress crack, but upon closer inspection the stone chip was obvious, hit in the blacked out area.

OP, you are not special, not at all. :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

On a serious note, I feel your pain. I've had the worst luck on the FL turnpike. I think the layout causes debris buildup. Driving my Jag convertible and sticking my hand up is really enlightening on the turnpike. Pelted with debris, constantly.

Not long ago a passing dump truck dropped a rock on to my windshield. That caved it in about 3 inches. Ka-BAM.

The folks at Safelite know me by name. I pay cash and they swap em out.

One week after getting a 2020 Equinox last February wife got a chip on the way to her dentist, had it repaired. 2 weeks ago going to see a granddaughter play soccer BANG. Couldn't find anything but today wife reports a crack near the cowl on passenger side🤬
That happened within 3 months after we bought our 2018 Equinox- semi kicked up a rock and cracked the windshield. Had to wait a few months to get it repaired since the 2018 was a new model.

YIKES! Oldest son had a car he got caught in driving on an interstate by a hail storm. How the windows were not cracked I don't know but the car was totaled out by Allstate. It looked like a machine gun had blasted it on the top and both sides. About the only thing not full of dents was the tail end of the car. He said he was lucky there was not a major crash it was so bad on the highway.

They certainly went up in prices. They quoted my over email something like $285 last week. Gonna keep an eye on it and see how my nail polish fix holds up. ;)
