Hey guys just looking for some opinions and experienced guidance here:

I switched to Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5w30 (DexOS-1 approved) for my 04 Silverado (currently 133,000mi) from Pennzoil Conventional 5w30 for the extended drain interval, basically i wanted a 7-8k OCI and I ride my motorcycle in the summer so thats about 1 oil change a year for me.

Recently I've been driving the truck more often and I've noticed that the past two oil changes now, around the 5-6k mile mark, my truck has been burning about 1qt of oil. (overall, little by little) GM Says that 1qt ever 3,500 miles is acceptable (obviously this is to safeguard themselves because to me this is unacceptable)

But when I was on a conventional oil, 3.5k OCI, i had no oil loss issues. Granted Im still only a quart low at 5k im still not getting the 7 or 8k OCI that I desire.

Should I go back to conventional oil and adjust my OCI back to 3.5-4k or should I stay spending the extra on Syn and adjust the OCI to 3.5-4k? The latter does not seem to make much sense, and the truck's oil life meter sometimes goes off before I change the oil and sometimes does not. I think its more of a "trip meter" than a true life system on this model truck.

Just at a loss here, also after switching to the more viscous 5w30 Synthetic i've been hearing some slight either injector clicking or pushrod tapping for the first 30-90 seconds after starting the engine. It goes away afterwards but its still a little disconcerting. This had not been happening prior and I read that with the more viscous synthetic oils that sometimes noises do make themselves more pronounced and apparent.

All this being said, I am willing to try one more OCI with Mobil 1 Syn which is what i've really been wanting to try anyways, but if it turns out to start burning oil again im really going to be seriously considering switching back to conventional.

If I were you I would start using a synthetic high mileage oil. Try Mobil 1 5w30 high mileage and see what happens.

It sounds like the synthetic doing some cleaning, its normal for consumption to increase when fist switching over from dino.
I would keep going with the synthetic, i would bet it improves over time and the ticking will go away.

I dont keep extra oil on hand for top offs. I usually buy a 5qt jug and a 1qt for a total of the 6 required qts for my oil change, i'd like to believe the syn is doing some cleaning but im more prone to believe that its actually just an old truck which is known to burn oil...burning oil.

anyway to isolate whether it is in fact cleaning, or will only time tell?

Also, should I stick with Quaker State Ultimate Durability or switch to Mobil 1 as planned? also at 133k should I be looking at an extended life oil or just regular 5w30 i have only bought regular oils i "feel" that an extended life oil would be for vehicles 200k+

1 quart every 5-6k miles isn't a lot. My brother's Lexus at 1 quart every 500 miles is. If it makes you feel better switch to a high mileage synthetic and run the 7-8k miles.

I have a '00 Silverado 1500 5.3 and after running PP10w30 for over 100,000 miles, and buying it used with 96,000 miles on it, my opinion would be to go back to conventional and resume your past OCI. I switched to try something to keep my piston slap quieter, but my truck audibly seemed a bit louder on the synthetic oil. Truck now has 255k.

I use and change according to the OLM, which usually goes from 4800-5400 miles. After switching to Pennzoil Conventional 10w30, the oil still looks very good even after 5k miles and it costs $25 for an oil change with a wix filter on it. It used 1/2 qt during the OCI, and about the same on synthetic when I did use it.

Texas weather is very different from Buffalo, but that is what worked for me.

Use a semi-syn high mileage oil like Valvoline Max-life and change every 5k. Does not cost much more than conventional but will give you a little bit longer drain interval.

If you like SOPUS products, based on your descriptions, personally I would try Quaker State Defy 5w30, a high mileage synthetic blend that's rated SL, which is fine for your year and model. Walmart sells it for about $17 a 5 quart jug.

+1.

Dallas69 said to just top off which is what I would do. Then you can go to 8k easy.

You switched to synthetic for good reasons, which are still valid. Burning only 1 qt in 5k with 133k on a known oil burner?

Plus I bet using conventional on the short used oil analysis didn't give it time enough to burn much.

Question - have you done a used oil analysis to compare vs your oil monitor?

^^^^ Best idea right here.

I'd think a semi-synthetic would be good for 7500 miles under normal driving conditions. Just plain conventional Mobil Super 5000 is good for 5000 miles.

Since you drive in Texas, I recommend my longtime favorite, Mobil 1 10w30 HM. It should easily take you to a 7k OCI and beyond. After regular use of this oil you still have consumption issues, you have a mechanical problem that needs your attention.

The OLM in your truck is mainly based on oil temperature and engine revolutions. If you drive the same pattern then the mileage will be close. The OLM in my '04 Rainier would go from 10k miles to over 17k miles, depending on driving.

The GM6094 standard that was in place when your truck was built can be met with a standard oil. And just buy 2 jugs since you will use it anyway. I would just go back to that unless you "feel" better using sythetic...in one member's words.

Which voice do you listen to from here ?

In your 1st post you stated that this is the 3rd OCI on this oil and its consumption should have settled by now.

Is your vehicle speaking to you here ?
I would suggest to go back to what worked previously and if you are obsessed with engine cleanliness reduced the OCI to 4000 miles.

I would rather spend the funds on an shorter OCIs rather than performing used oil analysis to monitor syn oils performance whatever. Do not misunderstand me here if the vehicle OEM calls for syn oil then you had better use the syn with the appropriate approval, grade etc

You don't need Full Synthetic oils to effectively clean engines.
I have come to trust the OEMs recommendation.

I listened to the syn crowd and believed it to be better until my vehicle developed various weeps which never went away.

Yeah it may have been a false seal exposed, in hindsight I rather have a false seal with no weep on conventional/ semi syn rather than a weep on Full Synthetic, and tried almost every brand in OZ over 9 years.

Better still like GMBoy said use a semi syn oil which is what I currently use now.
I would do next at least a couple on OCIs on conventional with short OCI s and then switch to the semi syn long term.

Keep the process simple so even the BOSS (eg my wife or your partner or child or grandparent etc) can continue with the routine.
