Look at the current crop of retirees downunder, the ones who've controlled the country and industry for the last three or four decades.

They came through when demarcation was rife, established non contributory retirement schemes (PONZI), then as they became influential/powerful pushed for labour reform, down-sizing, payment only on performance, not CPI, outsourcing, compulsory retirement saving (you can't have 9% of your pay now, you must put it away until your "preserved benefit" age).

A couple of years ago, they passed new laws increasing the age that I can touch MY retirement savings by 5 years.

Well they're at it again.

THE nation's peak seniors group has called on the Rudd Government to raise the retirement age to 75 and increase compulsory superannuation from 9 to 15 per cent

So they want to lock away 6% more of my wage, for 10 years longer.

Why would they want this ?

an immediate increase in the single age pension from 59 per cent to two-thirds of the couple rate to bring it in line with other OECD countries.

Mr Compton suggested that a new way to setting the pension should be established.

He argued that the Reserve Bank should declare annually the average wage and the Government legislate to peg the pension to a percentage of the figure.

I've maintained for ages that we need to maintain birth rates to keep the burger flippers and telephone hygenists (not to mention the road builders for the "grey nomads" to sail their Winnebago across), but it looks like these people have other ideas how they can be comfortably supported in their (early) retirement.

in my first job, the 9% super always seemed like being on top of my pay and I was quite happy...
When I switched jobs, the new company treated it as PART of my pay, wihtout me being real clear on it. So when negotiation time came I happily agreed to a figure, thinking my supe ris going on top, but alas, it wa sincluded, I felt like a [censored], and got a big paycut. I was bloody screaming!

but on topic, Australia doesn't have enough people to do the work (they may have enough people but not enough WILLING people)...

I think the super is probably a good idea, if you gave it to people as free money they would blow it on the pokies etc. and come back to centrelink for support (I did a job today on the sidewalk of a pokie place - what a sight, pensioners in and out of there at 9AM int he morning

But yeah, just leave the bloody retirement age alone already.. we need to have something other than dying at your desk at 80 to look forward to...

you know what the saddest thing is? Rudd would probably give it these increases to the boomers like a good samritan he is, by cutting a programme's funding out in the bush somewhere...

You will be happy to know that they are now working on allowing all the Kiwi's on the Gold Coast to retire back home on the New Zealand old age pension....and receive their Aussie Super Too! Suck both countries dry why don't they.

I think rudd and all those other morons that screw it up for the hard-working people should betaken out to the desert, bathed in blood and have some hyenas let loose on them. just my opinion.

We have the same thing here, it's called social security. Fits the bill of a ponzi scheme in every way. Private sector people would be put in jail if they tried the same thing, but because it is a government policy, it is OK.

Worse yet, our Gov. uses the "surplus" that comes in every year for the general fund and issues itself IOU's to be paid later, further increasing the debt load on future generations.

Will amount to 53 TRILLION dollars in a matter of decades.
Largest scam ever to be thrust on the American people.

Well, they're doing what's "sensible" NOW ...instead of when it was NEEDED ..back when they were starting to take in benefits.

It's more of "Hmm I've got mine ..but they're going to be in trouble" ..never admitting that the reason "they" are in trouble ..is because they got theirs.

We really failed in inspiring any sense of social responsibility. National pride in excellence (on many things) appears to be like a diode ..it only works one way.

"like a diode ..it only works one way"

There is always some "reverse leakage"… depending on the “design vulnerability” steps can be taken to minimize or eliminate the effects.

take care.

Not quite sure what drives the strange deals that exist between our two countries.

I'm sure it serves your nation's best interests. That's what I'm told here when things don't add up

To get rid of the Kiwi's by allowing them to receive two incomes if they go home? We're not stupid y'know - of course we'd do it!
