awful motor oil prices

In case you haven't noticed, the industrial heartland is rusting. The factories have been moved overseas. Slavery has been outsourced to where it is still legal - Communist China. Why is it that I get criticised for being a COMMIE, whereas we send all our manufacturing and BUY EVERYTHING from the Commies, while our own country goes down the [censored]. Geez, just because we're motor heads, doesn't mean we can't think. If you were so against Communism, then you wouldn't buy anything from the Communists - would you; instead Ronald Regan and Thatcher's policies made our enemies extremely prosperous, and ourselves, wondering about whether we can afford motor oil. This is what I call "The Great Swindle", to be followed by "The Great Depression". Yes, yes, the "Invisible Hand" of the market place. Even Greenspan was on TV last week, and he said "the invisible hand" was a "miscalculation" on his part.

Just pick the oil you want and pay the price. It's a very small expense that we seem to get pleasure that is sufficient to justify the cost. A few dollars a year is not worth worrying about. A good number of us here buy on sale and stash because we work on other people's cars. That's a lil different when they don't care what oil is used and don't always pay us for it.

You sound like some of my children college friends. Spoiled brats who really don't have a clue what REAL poverty, oppression and suppression is like. Oh they think they do, listening to their left leaning professors, but in reality fortunately by the hard work and sacrifice of their parents and millions of others, they don't have a clue.

BTW As I tell others who complain about living conditions, lack of a job, opportunity etc. If you can't make it where you live, you either improve your education level or skills so you can get a better job...or you MOVE to an area where that is possible. Don't sit sit on your duff and expect a hand out.

It really is that simple.

No politics at Thanksgiving! Anywho, the price of motor oil will come back down. While prices tend to be sticky, if the underlying components come down in price, competition will creep into the picture and the shelf prices will follow downward. For those of us who have a stash, it is time to dip into our strategic petroleum reserves and wait it out. I have enough oil for 11 oil changes on two cars. I will restock when prices come back down...

I've got a 5 year stash of motor oil, a 10 year stash of promoly, and a six year stash of oil filters. I won't be buying for quite a while. I too, will restock when prices come down, probably within a year I'll add a few jugs to my strategic reserve as well.
Fortunately I bought my Impreza last June when the US dollar was costing me 1.02. If I had to buy the same car now, I would be spending over $4,000 more. I bought my car in Minneapolis Minnesota, with 7,000 miles on it. It currently consumes about one ounce of motor oil every 1000 miles.

I picked up 4 cases of M-1 10W-30 at Costco last night for $23.00 a case. It sells for $32.00 a case. I had 4 coupons for $9.00 off a case. Went back today to pick up a few items and all M-1 was gone except for a few cases of 15W-50. The empty M-1 slots were being replaced with Castrol Syntec. Glad I stocked up!

By 6000 miles it was down slightly on the dispstick. I started out slightly overfilling it, by about 6 ounces, and after 6000 miles, it was down to the completely full mark.

I got a case of regular Valvoline 5w30 for close to $42. I think I will be waiting a bit to start a stash proper.

I was there just a few days ago and they had nothing but 10W-30 M1, and a whole pallet of it at that. Then today they had maybe 20 cases left, and a whole pallet of 5W-30 M1 next to it. Just down from that was a full pallet of Syntec 5W-50, and next to that a pallet of 10W-30.

I'm actually really surprised how fast Costco sells oil around here.

Any guess why Pennzoil 5w-30 is $12/5qt and 10w-30 is $8/5qt at Wal-Mart?

They have old stock Pennzoil 10w-30 with the old lower price, 5w-30 is new stock with new higher price. I would buy and use 10W30 if the recommended grade is xW30, specially for summer. Why would anyone paying 50% more for virtually the same oil ?

Unless you are getting a great closeout bargain, now isn't the time to be stocking up on motor oil. Retail prices are "sticky" in that even though crude oil has dropped by over 50%, motor oil prices are going to take their good old time coming back down to earth.

Lucky for me, I have about a two year strategic motor oil reserve thanks to bargain hunting which landed me a bunch of Valvoline and Pennzoil synthetics for around $1/quart over the last few years with Kragen coupon/rebate specials. It is likely that retail prices will be back down by the time I actually need to buy more motor oil.

I saw this weekend on HUCKABEE a trucker was complaining how fuel prices eat into his profits and how even oil changes doubled in price, sounds like he needs to find more value in his choice of oils.

does the thicker oil take up the extra space at the top of a worn cylinder? is that the most common thinking? I hear every mechanic say use thicker oil. I try and stay away from worn engines myself

Well based on the # of price increases/surcharges on Amsoil's diesel line, you clearly aren't talking about that....

if Amsoil is used as recommended by Amsoil it is the cheapest oil on the market

Saw regular Valvoline at AAP over the weekend in Austin for $4.09/qt. That is just absurd. Fortunately ST was still $1.88 each at WM, so for top off oil buying a single quart is not so bad. Still glad I got all that Synpower a while back, but STILL have not gotten any of the rebate checks...anyone else get theirs already?
