Working in San Antonio for a few days. Avis "mystery car" rental was the cheapest option.

Just received notification from Avis the mystery car is a TSLA model 3. Not happy🍩😲. Now I have to plan for when and where to fuel, something I have never ever had to do while using rental cars in San Antonio before.

I imagine the mystery car is a car that Avis has excess of at any location.....

That would kill my kamikaze 16 hr straight Florida runs
Although I suspect Avis has a special plan for ev, how does one return a ev back to the rental lot fully charged? I am use to paying for very pricey gas just outside of any major airport prior to returning a rental car fully filled up as required.

Geez...never thought of that
I guess they will surcharge you hard if you don't. Can you get out of the deal.

My stepson recently rented an EV in DC to come visit us in VB.

They told him that it had to be brought back fully charged.

But they gave it to him with 60% charge, and he had to plan a charging stop on the way.

I’ll be curious what Avis does about state of charge because their treatment of him wasn’t reasonable.

Tried to save money, so I did the prepaid option. Something I might do once out of fifty rentals if it makes financial sense.

I have many times canceled a rental and then rented immediately again when I am given a real stinker if a car. Mobil apps work well for that. But in this case, my hands are tied.

My flight departs SAT at 0545 Friday. Adds more complexity to the entire situation. I am staying about 45 minutes from the airport. Maybe I have to depart 90 plus minutes earlier than I would with a ICE, and hope the charging location is functional and not being used but other parties.

HaHa … just did that with Enterprise - way cheaper rate - arrived and they offered an Edge Titanium or Silverado for small suv price …
In Norway if we did not want EV - you got hybrid …

You don't have to return it full.
They mention it in the contract that you have to return it with at least 70% charge

Are you self-employed? If not, have your company absorb the extra charges. My supervisor has a $500 per hour policy for our time. If we save over $500 per hour than we have to take the connecting flight or longer layover.

Part of me thinks you're afraid that you'll love the Tesla. LOL

This doesn't sound that bad?
Will you be out of charger range?
You'll be overnighting in a hotel where it can charge while you 💤
Have you driven a Model 3 before?
This doesn't sound that bad?- I am on a static but very full and tight schedule. I likely rent 100+ rental cars annually, didn't plan on learning a new system with constraints and limitations over a ICE, which I wrongly assumed I would continue to receive as a rental.

Will you be out of charger range? I don't think so- but a issue I didn't want to have to plan for

You'll be overnighting in a hotel where it can charge while you? Another issue I will have to address. And do I have to move the car after I charge it, and will there be a parking spot available then?

Have you driven a Model 3 before? No, had a neighbor with one in Utah. He loved his TSLA. He was a California transplant and loved all things of that nature.

When you get to the counter tell them you can't accept the model 3 - where your going there are no chargers. Pay the penalty - or the upgrade fee or whatever. My guess is there are enough people that want them such that it won't be an issue, and there is likely a commission for them to upsell you to a caddy or such.

Or rent one of these:

I see
Well it seems like your attempt to save some money (which there's nothing wrong with) came with terms and conditions that conflict with your schedule

Last time I booked a rental through AAA/Hertz the mystery discount car was a Kia EV6, only catch was I had to fetch it from a remote part of the airport

Probably better off cancelling and rebooking an ICE car 🤷‍♂️
I'm not one to defend corporate, but the whole thread seems to whiff of boomer whining/EV distain
I'm not saying you in particular, just the sentiment

Would you have been equally as outraged if the mystery car was a penalty box CVT Mirage/Spark/Versa with crank windows and marginal A/C?
