I see there are youtube videos where people get very concerned about just .5 qts over filled, and they go about draining some oil. Has anyone here witnessed a problem with overfilling the oil of a typical car with 1 qt. or less?

I don't know or remember exactly how much it was overfilled, but it was around a quart.

A TU1 engine in a citroen was overfilled, and the crank hit the oil in the pan, it shook the engine and car, and sent oil throught the pcv like crazy until the level dropped a bit.

If you are driving the car like a normal person, you should be ok, there was a Video that showed once the car was started 2 quarts were lifted from the Oil Pan. I think it was a 4.6 Ford Engine. I would be more concerned with the oil being under filled.

So it depends on the vehicle. I had a few Northstar Caddies that did NOT like to be overfilled. In fact that led to a viscious circle of oil consumption due to PCV valve scavenging and other things. Those were typically overfilled, even by dealerships, since it specified 7.5 quarts. Mechanics just put in eight.

These days, I think there is a bit of designed in "wiggle room" in order to allow for fuel dilution of the oil. My Mecedes is constantly short tripped, and the oil level creeps up a bit. But a recent 2243 mile trip brought it right back down to normal.

My brother was a mechanic for years. He told me that people would often bring their cars in complaining of oil consumption issues, when in fact they had experienced the exact issue I mentioned.

I had my Focus overfilled significantly when I first bought it. I would check the oil and it would read below add, so I'd add some in then recheck and it was good. Then the next time I'd check same thing.

It wasn't until I drained out a LOT of oil that I realized I had to pull the dipstick, then reinsert for it to read correctly.

It sounds like you fell for "click bait". Congrats at least you didn't post the video.
Friends don't let friends post youtube videos...............

Start the engine up drive it a couple minutes then check the dipstick. If it isn't foamy or milky you are probably OK. My daughters Trax calls for 4.2 quarts. A 5 quart jug is perfectly fine in her vehicle.

Lol. I did it for testing purpose though. I wanted a perfect reading to see if I lose any oil after 7,500 miles.

A "moderate" oil overfill should blow through the PCV into the intake and get burned - no big deal but it could gunk up the intake. With older engines (prior to PCV) excess oil would just blow out the crankcase breather vent.
I keep my dodge Dakota beater truck just at or below the low mark.
If you meant the "high" mark, then yes I do the same with my cars.

In general, I wouldn't worry if up to 5% over. Meaning 1/4 quart over if the capacity is 5 quarts.

Anything over 5% I wouldn't risk it. You would think by design, they should allow these kind of numbers like at least 3%.

I've always had a little over on the dipstick without issues. So maybe their design does allow for slight overfill
