Autozone “Oil Full” sign

I just took my used oil to Autozone this past weekend. It was the first time they took the oil from my hands to dump it themselves. Fine with me.

The AZ waste oil drum in town is always full. I take my waste oil (<5 gallons) to the recycling center that's 20 minutes away. They always have capacity.

I once got gas early Sunday morning around 6:45 AM and the gas station is next to an AutoZone.

I saw 6 Rotella T4 white gallon used oily jugs in front of the store.

My mechanics heat their shops with waste oil.

I greet them saying: “heating oil delivery!”

They’re pleased to have the fuel.

Do people ever leave jugs of used oil at your shop ?

I’ve seen jugs of used oil left at AAP and AutoZone front the door left by people after hours and before the store opens.

No signs for my business & I do zero advertising, Half my business is done for other businesses.....Shops, Car Lots, & some Fleet, Other half is existing customers & referrals.
I don't clog up my time with small jobs....I'm after Engines, Transmission, Differential, HVAC, EVAP & Diag/Electrical.

Find a shop that heats with waste oil. I gladly accept waste oil from DIYers because thats free heat for me come winter.

Does DI oil with some fuel dilution , affect using it in your waste oil heater ?

Does your town have a waste collection point/transfer station? Many have drums for used oil.

I've encountered tanks full very often at stores.

They don’t accept oil anymore and even force appointments if you want to drop off normal recyclables outside curbside .

Wierd thing is nobody has wanted the container the used oil is in for years, not sure what the issue is but I always have to toss my own jugs

Nope, When we open fuel lines or change fuel filters the fuel collected goes right in the tank as well. Once it goes in the 275 gallon tank and gets mixed around there is a very very small percentage of gas. The only common thing that wont burn is water or antifreeze. If we get water or antifreeze mixed with oil we have a separate drum we use, let it sit outside and freeze then separate the oil off the top

I've wondered about this, too. They act like ANY gas is a capitol offense but I always thought small quantities would dilute so much as to be insignificant.

I guess the problem is you get people thinking they can dispose of several jerry cans this way....or something

Something strange I’ve never encountered before.

Autozone is close so drop off oil there, say oil for recycling dude points at hand drawn sign of dipstick with Oil Full on it.

I say what? Explains they can’t accept oil.

Same story at all 4 of the usual suspects, not accepting oil for recycling.

Bleh, a new oil stash is bad enough, I don’t need a stash of used.

Found it frustrating when the town dropped taking used oil In any way shape or form after 3 decades of curbside oil pickup.

Hoping this doesn’t become a used tire recycling situation where no amount of money will recycle one because nobody takes them unless you are buying a new one. All the used treads I end up with go on Craig’s as a curb alert now if I don’t have anything to recycle when I buy the tire because even the town won’t take used tires and nobody locally accepts them anymore.

I have never successfully sold a used tire even when it was unused but worn ones will disappear as long as it’s a curb alert with no means to contact me.

Fbook I can’t give away free tires because the zombies want me to deliver them or want them to have guaranteed passing tread when they are marked free junk tires.

Right if Autozone's tanks are full take it to Advance Auto or O'Reily's.

I have found that weekend oil changers fill the waste oil tanks by Sunday and waste oil recyclers may not suck out the tanks until late Tuesday.

I always call the guys at Advance Auto before bringing in my 15 quart dump.

My Walmart is closer to the house than any of our Auto Parts stores. So, Walmart is usually the place , since I am always there a couple times a week. Never have a problem. They always accept it without any fuss. I must be lucky and stop by on the right days?

I have had them tell me "You can just put your jugs down right outside the gate to the small locked fenced in area." "We will put in in our tank later on when we have time."

Our Walmart is one of the smaller size stores but they do have the full size / service Tire & Auto Center to the side , rear of the building. The oil collection station they have is a set up with the oil tank and other product containers located inside a gated / locked / fenced in area just to the outside of the back entrance to the Auto shop bays. I think we are probably lucky here as most places around will accept the used oil I hear from guys who drop theirs at other places. Walmart has always been so convenient and easy for me I rarely have had to bring oil to any other places.

This is the time when Walmart is where things are done right. No gimmicks and no lies. I'm glad my local municipal trash picks them up if in 1 gal milk jug too. Local Pepboys is usually cool with it as well.

O'Reilly in my area is the worst.

Sad. The EPA types spent so much effort (our taxes) on educating the DIY crowd to NOT put the used oil in that hole you dug in the backyard like Popular Mechanics magazine told your dad, and now you're out of easy options for PROPER disposal?

Yet, the EPA still doesn't tell other government agencies to "stop spraying petroleum products (basically new or used used oil) onto dirt roads" or using asphalt (something pretty darn close to oil, like first cousin close).

I don't advocate for pouring used oil out on the back 40, but the EPA only really cares about, well, I'm not sure what they care about, other than collecting revenue.

I'm old enough that I dumped a lot of oil out in the back 40. Still don't advocate doing it.
