Autozone “Oil Full” sign

Last time I had my waste oil tank pumped...Ran me $150. I don't accept waste oil.

All Autozone's are corporate stores, I imagine corporate has no knowledge of this.....

Lots of counties have used oil collection facilities that are usually located at places where they have designated for folks to haul smaller sized trash items. I would ask around and look into that possibility.

I had a Autozone guy at the store near me get pissed off as I was emptying my 5 quart container of used motor oil in the tank… He tried saying it was full… Hecquite an attitude about it at first.. It was not… Helen Keller could have heard the motor oil falling to the bottom of the **** container. Me being me… I stayed chill and told him it was in fact empty.

He walked up to me and started to calm down and said he was told it was full… I told him I know how to read the levels on those containers and that I knew it was empty and fine to add what I had to it.

I’ve had very good luck with WM taking my used oil. They are much easier to get to for me as well.

I recall the oil container being full once when I worked at Oreilly. It had plenty of room so I kept adding oil to it. 🤫

A few weeks ago when I brought my used oil to Advance Auto, the guy in the back by the recycling tanks said they just got fined $10,000.00 when gasoline was found mixed in with the recycled oil. I guess that will make these places hang a "Tank Full" sign up.

Hard to believe no garage in chilly WI would want used oil for their garage used oil burner!

There's a garage up and over the mountain I usually take mine to as the guy has a waste oil furnace. However, the past couple years it hasn't been that cold around here and he stopped taking it. Asked the local Advance and they still take it, for now. I need to get over there and dump my 5 gal pail.

When my local drop-off areas are full ( not often), I donate the oil to the community lawn care crew. My oil rarely accumulates more than 3k miles. So far, they've been happy to take it.

Hard to believe that used oil would be that hard to get rid of (for the stores collecting it I mean). Crude oil, and the things made from it, is valuable enough that I would think used oil has decent value as a feedstock. Yes it's contaminated, but still has to be a far better starting point than anything coming out of the ground. Guess I'm wrong. I just collect mine in one of the big plastic liquid totes and take some out whenever I need it for starting fires or whatever else. I put in more than I take out, so once that gets full I'll start another tote and figure out what to do with the full one.

got to have a backup plan

I'll chime in
Out West here in southern California If you were to burn anything like that, you'd have a full scale fire brickade coming down your street.
I frequent the local auto part stores to drop off waste oil.
I put them in a plastic trash bag and leave them outside.

If they don't accept your oil, I would just leave them outside after business hours.

By me if they sell it they have to accept the used oil. Signs on front windows. Tank could be full it happens.

I was in more of hurry one day and Firestone was open, same sign. I brought my 2x 5 qt jugs in and waited behind the lady that just paid ti get her oil changed while she waits. Counter guy said sorry tanks are full. I'm like REALLY? You just sold her an oil change where will that go? Maybe I'll stand here, call the county/state inspection guy and DEC. I'm looking forward to see how this turns out.

He said leave the jugs right there......

It certainly does happen that the tanks are full and the service doesn't get there timely to empty.

If it's just occasional, let it slide. If it's frequent, ask for the DM contact info. Say you went down the street to their competitor and purchased your parts there after pouring your oil. If there's truly a regional problem and the DM knows this, it may not help to say that.

The one time our Advance was full they just said to leave your jugs and they'd pour it once empty. This isn't great if you actually want your containers back, but otherwise a great solution.

If it's a really busy store and you think they're being disingenuous just carry it to the far end of the counter and leave it on the floor. I do this when I can at an O'Reilly who refuses to let you throw your jugs away there. Every other store in town takes your old jugs and they all use the same trash service, so it makes no sense.

As mentioned, try also: TSC, WalMart, Grease Monkey, Jiffy Lube etc.

O'Somewhere used to use Safety Kleen. Earlier this year that was changed to World Oil. At least in our area, it's way more consistent service. World Oil comes to the store every Tuesday morning like clockwork. Never missed a data. Safety Kleen came when they came, sometimes not at all.

As for people saying they just leave it when someone isn't paying attention if the tank is full... shame on you, you suck. Just call ahead to wherever you're trying to bring it... it takes 20 seconds. And ask what day it gets emptied so you know when you can bring it next time.

Do people ever leave jugs of used oil at your shop ?

I’ve seen jugs of used oil left at AAP and AutoZone front the door left by people after hours and before the store opens.
🙁
