Automatic Transmission Problem....

I bought a 2003 Honda Civic w/ automatic transmission for a very cheap price in which I could not turn away...so this car will become my dd while I build my other project car...

None the less, I bought the car, engine runs smooth and the auto transmission shifts nicely but only one problem, in which the seller had indicated to me...

the problem is this:

The gauge cluster is totally off with the what gear you are in...

meaning:

"P" still means park
then when the gauge cluster indicates "R" its actually in Neutral

you have to get half way between the Neutral and drive to say it is in drive, the "D" in the gauge cluster is D3

yeah it was interesting enough when I test drove it, but none the less once the seller shown me when it was drive, the car shifted smoothly...

so what could be the cause of this? suggestions?

The cause? I don't know! But, a solution is to take off the shift lever cover and make the proper adjustments so that the transmission in showing the correct position. A Chilton or Haynes manual(at any autoparts store) can give you the exact procedure for this task. If

I don't know Honda, but are you talking about something like this?

As others have said, there should be an adjustment at the shifter (console shift assumed). Watch them have it nicely contained in some integrated black box mechanism that's only "serviceable by replacement".

That is exactly what i am talking about...

but will check whats under the shifter console first...
