Not sure how I feel about this, but it's strange to me that the story said that this is the second time the "door failed to protect" the kid. Not sure if that means this is the second time he stuck his hand in the door, but you would think that he would have figured that it wasn't a good idea to stick his hand in the door after the first time.

There is only so much you can do to make a feature like power sliding doors fool proof. I kind of feel like this is a case of "you should know better than to stick your hand in front of a moving door." Honda, and the other manufacturers should probably put warning labels in the door jamb telling people to not enter the van when the door is closing though. It seems like common sense, but then again we are talking about young kids, and we all know how young kids can be. Dealers should probably also warn people to not enter when the door is closing, even when they show off the sensors.

Um, when I was a kid I just got my fingers slammed in the door. That was enough for me to learn never to put my hand there again. Are kids dumber these days?

I guess we need a big sticker: DO NOT put HANDS in front of door when it is closing. lol. But yeah, 01ranger has a point - if you're going to advertise it as child proof - it better be.

With her son's hand caught in the door, she takes a picture. What a loving mother. The button to open the door was right in front of her, but she took a picture.

This is a set up so she can sue Honda. We have a 2004 Honda Odyssey EX-L and there have been no problems even remotely like this. The biggest problem I have is the gets pulling the handle the same time as I hit the button. How did he hand get that far back? I am not even remotely buying it this time.

The kid does have his hand quite a ways back there... I tried putting my arm into the same position and ... wow that hurt. That kid has some serious flexibility. Somethings not right. It doesn't look natural at all. You'd think the kid would be trying to pull his hand out...

I guess they hired failure analysis engineers that were too intelligent. I can see them now, "No way!! Only an idiot on steroids on blue moon Tuesdays would manage to do the backflips needed to make that a risk."

I keep telling everyone about the 3000^2' floor and the fallen critical item/object finding the 3^2" drain ...but no one listens

Maybe we should put Moms hand back there and let her kid take a picture. You know, that sucks. She had to get her phone out, switch it to camera mode, aim, hold still, shoot the picture, probably check to make sure she got a good picture, and then try and get the kid out. Now, just how LONG do you think all that took? In the mean time, the poor kid is screaming his lungs out. I'm with original hacker on this one. Either the kids are dumber, parents are stupid or looking to sue. I'm sure they won't have a problem finding a lawyer. They'll settle out of court and then raise the price of the van. They will also put stickers everywhere.

She turned around to see her 3-year-old's hand trapped up to the palm in the rear of the sliding door, four fingers crushed with no way to pull them out.

Then she did something most mothers couldn't: she took a picture with her cell phone. "I wanted to be able to show the dealership, show Honda, what was going on."

Indeed - Mom = zero, Kid = scarred for life

We have an 2006 Ody. Kids have grown into worse forms of dangerous activities.

Help me out here. Where are you getting the images. I see none on the page ..nor any links to any. It's probably a setting on my browser.

Are you kidding me? Someone needs to slap the ____ out of that ____.

I think the door already did!!

The kid got what he deserves. He had to really work at getting into that position, and he is old enough to know better, especially since he apparently had a previous encounter with the door. But in the end, it will be Honda's fault.

And I bet the mother just put the kid in the seat, pushed the button and walk away. G_d forbid she actually watch and make sure the kid doesn't put his hand in front of the 200lbs. moving door...

Wow it looks like his arm is really bent back there. How in the world does that happen? It's as if he TRIED to get it stuck in the door.

It's just foreshortening due to the use of a wide angle lens close up, which exaggerates the scale between foreground and background objects. That same effect can be used to make, let's say a big pig, appear to be the size of a hippo.

People with cars with automatic doors may want to replace their kid with one of these.

I had never actually thought about a kid getting their hand caught in a automatic sliding door, but I can see where it would be easy to do. Now maybe most adults would think enough not to stick their hand in, but kids usually act first and later think about it. However even adults must not always think first, they are the ones that stick their hands under a running mower to clear out the grass.

I walked into a health food shop of all places, and my little girl (2yo at the time) followed me.

the door had both pressure pads, and motion detectors.

It saw her, and opened the door.

didn't feel her, and closed the door.

Couple of great big sliding doors caught her as she was standing directly between them, ogling the bright lights.

She got hit, started screaming, but had nowhere to run, as she couldn't identify the risk to run away from.

Anything that behaves "automatically", as programmed by adults and kids don't mix.

As a kid, I could articulate my index finger to touch my wrist, in reverse flex. Tried it tonight, and can't get past an inch close...still looks nasty.

my kid's hand is stuck in the door. he's screaming. the first thing that pops into my head is "take a picture"?

secondarily, that car seat is too close to the door to let it close w/o supervision.

Back in the day if they had these instead of the VISTCRUISER, after mama got your hand out, you would have gotten a beating for being stupid and your arse would have hurt more than your hand!

As a young kid, I "helped" my Grandfater close his garage door. I did this with the ends of my finers inbetween the horizontal panels. Yeee-owww! I never did that again.
