I have to chuckle at the people who aren't in control of every little aspect of the car 100% of the time. I bet some complain they can't control tje timing, the fuel injection, all the time lol

Well if the car comes with automatic headlights, after dark on some models you have no choice but to keep the parking brake set if you don't want the headlights to come on. Would I prefer the automatic headlights were not only defeatable but hard defeatable for every subsequent restart? Absolutely yes, but after you own a vehicle with automatic headlights it actually is pretty convenient most of the time rather than monotonously turning them on and off every time yourself. It's just convenience the same way an automatic transmission, auto up and down power windows, auto door locks, remote keyless entry etc is, or having an electrical system monitor that shuts off any lights that are left on as auto headlight won't allow the headlights to stay left on accidentally. As a side nanny benefit, if your lights are not on after dark you know you haven't released the parking brake lol. But I can understand someone prefering everything being manual and not automated.

you DO know that theres a difference between a parking break and an emergency break. i know i know i misspelled break.

Click the parking brake in one notch, just enough to disable the auto lights but not enough to actually engage them. I used that trick on my old cavalier all the time to keep the DRLs off until I finally just cut the relay.
 
Always. If you forget to put it in park w/o the parking brake on,your car will be G-O-N-E!
 
Handbrake is on every time the vehicle is to be left unattended, whether it is in gear/park or not.

Not sure what an emergency brake is, nor why foot brakes don't have a ratchet and pawl mechanism.
 
I always set the PARKING brake.


What's with calling the parking brake an emergency brake? Sure you can use it in emergencies, but you can do lots of stuff in an emergency, like jump out of the car. I don't see anybody calling a car door an "emergency escape hatch"

Another pet peeve of mine, calling a manual tranny MTX and an automatic ATX, go to any Civic, Mazda 3 or other forums with mosly young drivers and you will see it a lot, where on earth are they getting the "X" from?

No, I don't want to drive a model T, thank you.

But too many automatic features really make people bad drivers, and too unaware of things. Then when they get in a car without those features, they drive all around town at night with no headlights. See it *all* the time these days, never used to see it at all. Or they drive around with their high-beams on because they don't realize the headlights have switched on and they had high-beams on the last time they drove the car at night.

The other thing I don't like is for a car to unlock all its doors and turn the interior light on when you turn the ignition off. Gee thanks, carmaker, you just showed the thug lurking in the parking lot that my wife is alone in the car, with her purse open putting her keys away, and you unlocked the door for him to come snatch it. :-/

Not sure about other manufactures, But Lexus dealer`s can add/remove some of those features.

Plain jane Toyotas and Scions can be similarly customized, as can Hondas.
 
You should always set the parking brake because very few parking lots and streets are perfectly level. Parking lots, for instance, are graded to allow water to flow toward the drain. Even home garages may not be perfectly level .

Why? I mean why set the parking brake on an automatic? I keep hearing about possible damage but I've never seen or heard of anybody ever having any. I had cars with automatics with 200K - 300K miles on them. I've owned and worked on a LOT of cars but NEVER had any trouble in my 60+ years!
Like I said on a steep hill, sure. But a driveway?

Seen a Rambler Matador with a failed pawl in the box.

leave that old beast in Park, and you'll be chasing it, run over, or squished.

Safer just to apply the park brake. every time.
