how many people here with autos use their parking brake whenever they park their vehicle? ive always done it out of habit and thought that's what its there for why not use it. my friend on the other hand makes a point to never use his, it feels like you ran over a pothole when he shifts out of park on a hill, the whole thing shakes and makes a crack noise but he thinks nothing of it.

I always use it. Not good putting all that weight on the parking pawl.
Well swirl P, this is obvious an important issue for u, but I gotta tell ya, u mite want to pour urself a big long island tea and drift on out to sea , the south pacific is nice this time of year and the dark skinned girls with flowers in their hair will trip ur trigger, u know what I mean. but,,IMHO, u brake when u wanna,,Im going to the south pacific, u b the judge.

I never use it. I also don't park on hills so there is no extra stress on the parking pawl.
I echo ls1mike's statement. I find that using the parking brake before shifting into P makes it almost effortless to shift out of P later, whereas before there was sometimes quite a bit of resistance encountered, even on flat surfaces.

Agreed. I use it as well for this reason.

I never did until I drove a stick shift for a couple years. Ever since I've used it all the time.

I use mine 98% of the time. If I'm stopping on an incline, I'll first put it in Neutral, Engage parking brake tightly, then put it in park.

Somebody told me to do that when I first started driving, done it ever since. Shifts out of park so much smoother. Trying to get my mother to do it with her Buick, because it shifts out of park so hard, but not a sound if the parking break is on.
I've always used mine, as my cousin who taught me how to drive drove it into my brain. He drove stick.
I pop it into neutral, put park brake on, let off the real brakes and wait until i know the car is locked down, then go into park.

I did until it froze up. Now I park against a curb or pick a flatter parking spot. The transmission does shift out of P much more easily that way.
That is one drawback, in icy conditions the parking brake cable can freeze stuck on rare occasion. I always set the brake for another reason. I'm hoping if people bump into my car in parking lots maybe it will help prevent and engine mounts or parking pawl from breaking.
I'll do it on a steep grade but the parking brake pedal on some cars makes it a huge hassle otherwise. If the car has a handle I'll use it every time.
