So i bought a bottle of this stuff today poured it out and then did the standard sniff test, and you know what? It smells EXACTLY like Havoline. Now most oils smell the same, except for Havoline which has a very unique smell... the only other oil that has smelled liek this is this AutoLab stuff.. its a value brand that sells for the regular price of 1.88/liter. Does anyone think its just relabelled havoline? (the bottles are the same too)

Well...it's been pointed out in a few threads here that Shell makes all of Canadian Tire's oil, Autolab included, but they may have changed suppliers now.

good point. i did some researching today and the Motomaster, Shell and AutoLab bottles have the same logo on the bottom. Hmm I wonder how bad this stuff really is? Its even cheaper than the Nugold!

I thought Autolab was re-refined oil, but I noticed on the label it says it is virgin. I would say it's the same stuff as Tech 2000 (Wal-Mart) and Auto Prix (Zellers) since they are all almost the same price down to the penny, but I believe someone said Auto Prix is a Safety Kleen re-refined oil, so...
dunno.gif

I do know Formula Shell is only slightly more expensive at CT, so I'd guess Autolab is no-name Shell. But then aren't Nugold and Motomaster too? Maybe they're all the same oil but with different add packs. Autolab is API rated SL/SM, so it can't be *that* bad. Don't think it's energy conserving though.

API

Canadian Tire's oils are no longer on the list of licensees. They are using the API marks without permission, as well as fraudulently claiming "energy conserving" on 20w50 and other thick oils. Check the back of a jug of 20w50 and you will be surprised. I still buy their oil occasionally, though, because I trust Shell to do a decent job.

I assumed that Autolab oil was the same as Tech 2000 and Auto Prix re-refined oil, because the 'NuGold' oil makes the very specific claim that it is virgin oil, whereas the Autolab stuff does not, and it is priced the same as Tech 2000, which is definetly a re-refined Safety Kleen oil.

If it is not re-refined oil, then it is definetly the cheapest virgin oil on the canadian market....

One other thing that is really interesting if you seach the API site is that the 'AutoPrix' brand of oil is all only rated SJ, from the 5w30 to the 20W-50. I know this is still a valid rating, but it is getting close to becoming obsolete.

If you look on the bottles of this oil at Zellers, though, they all proudly state on the front that they are rated SM! Am I missing something here, or is Zellers lying about this?

You're right. It also says there's a SJ/CG-4 in 20w50. But WalMart has brands made by SK that are SJ. Maybe to update the license would cost money. SK has so many different brands. They even make a 20w20 and a 10w SJ/CF

Autolab *does* claim to be virgin. At least on all the labels I've seen.

I double-checked - you're absolutely right. So for people looking for the cheapest 'virgin' oil on the market, this is it! Not energy conserving, though, and only SL-rated....
