All the autos I have seen, use a mecahnical cable select the gears in the transmission, when you move the lever in the cabin.

Does there exist a SHIFT BY WIRE setup? E.g. the shifter is an electrical switch and a motor or solenoids move the gears inside of the tranny?

You know where I am going with this...

Absolutly. There are many automatic transmissions with fully electronic range selectors, primarily in higher end luxury vehicles. Expect to see more of this coming down the pipe in the next two model years, in less expensive cars.

As far as manual transmissions go, DSGs are completely electronic, as are the earlier flappy-paddle electro-hydraulic manumatics.

Partial on a lot of stuff where D hydraulically engages forward then 3-2-1 is a computer input function.

Now, is there any passing the control through the ECM, that could prevent shifting it from D - N if the ECM freaks out?

Next thing you know the on/off switch will be power by wire. Oh wait...

Tie a yellow string in to the old fuse box...

as well as their Voith and ZF counterparts. BMW, Mercedes and Toyota use SBW to varying degrees - the Prius, and the newer 1/3/5/7 series are all SBW.
