hey all, i'm new to the forum.

i ordered 4 bottles of auto-rx last night, 2 for me and 2 for my roomate. i thought since i'm doing this, i might as well do it right.
right now i'm using 10w40 mobil one synthetic and i was wondering what kind of dino oil i should run with auto-rx. i've seen mixed opinions, ranging from 5w50, 15w50 , 20w50, 15w40 and the list goes on.
So what brand and what weight should i use for the auto-rx treatment? its a 97 btw, with an s52 engine, and i live in arizona (yeah its hot).

i'm also throwing 2 oz in my transmission, diff and power steering , is it ok if i use the old oil with auto-rx and then flush it?

thanks all

thanks all

Definitely run a HDEO 15w40 oil.

There are no dino 5w-50, 15w-50 oils... 20w-50 isnt worth it, IMO, especially given the awesome cleaning power that a HDEO gives... 15w40 oils are some of the best out there.

I'm using Chevron Delo 15w40 for my turbo Volvo and will switch back to synthetic when I'm done with two cycles of clean and rinse. You can get the Delo for about $37/case (six x 1 gallon jugs) at Costo and other discount stores. It's a good match for ARX.

delo 15w40 it is... i think thats what bmw reccomends, not sure though.
is the delo within bmw specs?

from reading around here i noticed that arx and lc do an excellent job, in different sectors though. so i thought why not order some lc20 and some fp60 too.
I would think its fine to use the fp60 in the gas tank while running the a-rx treatment, and when i finish with a-rx, run the lc20 with the synthetic i'll be using... is that ok?

Cliffnotes: so for now, dino oil/a-rx with fp60 in the gas, and when i'm done with a-rx, synthetic/lc20 with fp60.

Take time please to read the application instructions. 2 ounces in your transmission is NOT
going to give results.Visit www.auto-rx.net.these application instructions work and it is why we guarantee our product.

Have you read the FAQ on www.auto-rx.com? what makes you think your going to get correct advice from everyone who answers your post ? slow down and do it right. Thanks

I use FP60 in my 95 525i and am very pleased. Plan to use LC20 after I complete an Auto-RX treatment. Waiting to receive Auto RX. BTW, listen to Frank. I plan to follow his advice to the letter.

delo is fine for BMW specs, and is a dino oil, so is good per ARX instructions.

I didnt pick up on the 2 oz for PS and trans application, which you mentioned in the original post. The ARX treat rates have been determined from lots of real world results. Likely there will be more junk in the trans than 2 oz of arx can remove - and as a result, it wont give a satisfactory job.

At the same time, m3s have MT's and MT are usually fairly easy on their oil - I dont know that ARX is really necessary in there anyhow...

JMH

hey man, yeah its MT, i thought that frank and you assumed that it was an auto, but that didnt cross my mind before posting. anyways, its all good.
i just picked up some delo 15w40, getting ready to pour it in any minute now. auto-rx should be here in a couple days.
diff whine?! never heard anything like that, not on e36 anyway.
i'll be switching to royal purple for the transmission and redline for the diff, as soon as i finish the arx treatment, and GC for the motor.

oh it happens... even on E39 cars!!!

Sounds like you have a good plan!

Consider using LC afterwards - its done great in my e30.

Ever thought about Specialty Formulations gear oil? Not that my E46 had any noticable whine, diffy is nice and quiet with SF in it. Decibel level subjectively measured with the Stapes and an open window

hey frank, take it easy on me. i did read the application instructions, and they say 1 ounce for every quart the trannt holds (MT). well mine holds just under 2 quarts, so its 2 ounces.
Oh and, i sure dont do the first thing ppl on here suggest i do. I knew for a fact that bmw uses 15w40, and searched and found that delo is a good and appropriate oil...
and your instrutctions dont say if i have to drain the transmission oil first, or treat with the old oil and then flush.

I'd bet that it was automatically assumed that you had an AT... After all, how many folks drive MT vehicles anymore? Not many, unfortunately.

I started to asume it too, thus some of the wording in my last post... until I thought back and realized that M3s didnt come with ATs... well maybe some e36 ones did, but I dont think so...

First, sorry to hijack this thread. Last reply like this

Never really sounded loud in the first place. I do know now that there is no whine from the diff. Whether this is attributable to using SF or just having the "lifetime" fluid changed out, I don't know. I do know that SF in the manual trans made a big difference and can probably surmise from this that the SF fluid, being top-notch stuff, is keeping the teeth-gnashing (pun intended) at a minimum.

update:
i have a transmission leak, and it doesnt look good. i'm wondering if a-rx can do smthn about something more than a small leak.. what do you think?
do i have to run it with dino oil also? its a 5speed MT

ARX can do wonderful things a lot of times... its a miracle worker of sorts for a lot of problems... though not all.

Use it with dino oil, and follow directions. If it doesnt work, so be it... spend the money and get it fixed right.

JMH

ok, cant seem to find the vis of the redline mtl i'm using right now... what should this be replaced with?
frank told me its fine to run it with the synthetic, and then rinse with dino

If Frank said it, then go for it... DId he realize that there was a leak, or did he think you just want to clean? There is a difference in so far as how the seals firm up, etc.

If I recall correctly, MTL is approximately an 80w-90 gear oil equivalent. You can check on their website to be sure.

A good choice for a little whle might be pennzoil synchromesh... I believe its mostly/all dino oil, and its heavier than an ATF but lighter then other gear oils, and more importantly, its designed for the metalurgy of a transmission.

Id make sure that its OK to have syn in there when youre actually messing with seal mechanical properties and not just cleaning.
