Yes, I knew it was the MAF sensor cause when I unplugged it, the car actually ran (with the SES light on of course); plugged it back in, would only run with throttle.

They charged $287 bucks for it, AND, the dumb [censored] even charged an additional $15 to top off the antifreeze even when it was ABOVE the full mark.

1/2 the blame goes to the shop.
Don't forget that the other 1/2 of the blame goes to the consumer.

Maybe we should retitle the thread, "vehicle owners are stoopid and can't say no".

Shops are in the business to make money. When you go there, they WILL make money on you. It is up to YOU to decide how much profit you're willing to give them.

Learning to service you own car can save you a ton of money.
Keeping accurate records on maintenance schedules will prevent shops from recommending unneeded service.

Critic, why even mention me in a thread? BTW, you can't over maintain anything mechanical. But, typical consumers undermaintain their vehicles. Can you blame a jippylube for 'free market'? I blame the owner!

I have a problem with owners that do NOT watch their vehicles getting service. All those fancy charges and services are meaningless if they were NOT done. If they were done, then your vehicle should last longer.

Don't forget that your doctor, dentist, lawyer, accountant.... are also crooks. But, when someone with a 'title' charges you excessively for something not needed, who complains?

Just sold my 4Runner (well sold is a term I guess) interstate.

We have annual roadworthy tests in my state. They have one only when transferring...which he is trying to do.

Dust in the rear drums...it needs a full rear brake overhaul.
Needs a new windscreen. And they can't register it because it's missing the fan shroud (it's an OH&S issue)...oh and it needs new wiper blades (the old ones are three months old).

Drive in that state, and I've seen tennis balls roll through closed doors on corners.

I feel sorry for people that get ripped that bad.

Drew, I bet their maf sensor just needed to be cleaned with some electric parts cleaner, and put back together, it would have worked fine.

A maf sensor is not over 100 bucks at any parts store. Not even the dealer would one be 287 bucks.

Unreal, just unreal.

Another thing that I don't recall reading is that if something goes wrong with anything after it has been to a mechanics, most people say, "Shouldn't they have caught that." That is why some mechanics I know hate working on cars that have owners (like me) who do as much work as possible. My mechanic always tells me if I bring it in for something I botched he'll charge me double. I see them as no different than electricians, plumbers, contractors, etc. Everyone is interested in making money and CYAing. Annoying, but the only real solution is to be able to take care of things yourself. Ignorance is pricey.
