AUTO EXTRA 618-57060 CUT OPEN

This filter was off our lazy, worthless maintenance/building technicians 22’ Ram 2500 quad cab king bed 4x4 truck. 6.4 HEMI engine. Last oil change I did; at 12k. Now truck has 20,500 miles on it. Last time I used Service Pro 0w40. Got big boss to get us MOPAR 0w40 oil from now on on these trucks. Put another of these filters on with MOPAR 0w40 oil.

I’m betting short trips, winter weather caused waviness we see.

I think these are just the cheapest wix alternative made filter offerings (Auto Extra). After 8500 miles this 6.4L Hemi is still keeping oil looking almost unused!

These and the new “ProTec” are cheapest I’d say. The HEMI is kinda dirty running engine as OVERKILL has mentioned.
 
Pretty ugly looking. That said, imo 7500 mi too long this AE jobber. Like all 'made for' oil filters, these are made to AE specs. Clearly minimal media area with wide pleat spacing is the result. Since I didn't read that it tore, best I can say, it survived. If this is representative of all AE jobbers with hencho en Mexico coo, imo these are a 5k mi 'max' fci filter. A better quality filter should be used if 7500 mi going to be standard fci. Louvers look fine to me, good even.

Look at 53's "extra pics" section on pic 3 going from left to right. There is louvers that are bent closed almost & don't look like they were stamped out very well. I had to take a second look too.

I did see what 'appears to be" a bent louver. That said, taking all the louvers 'in total', they look ok to me. And having done many c&p and taken down tube louver photos, while some appear more open than others, camera angle can be a factor in that observation. Here what I see, given the total number louvers, just don't see a significant issue. A shot with light would be more telling.

If a bent louver, no doubt stamping QC could improve. Bigger issue for me though as noted, the skimpy amount of media resulting in wide pleat spacing. It is lowest tier jobber though.

Am I wrong in thinking a new, possibly $60K truck deserves a LITTLE BIT better oil filter? Maybe the company spent so much money to buy or lease it, they can’t afford to maintain it… I am going to cut the next Service Pro oil filter off the company Transit, I just want to see how bad it is!

Easy answer: it’s a fleet vehicle. Company always will go with whichever filters they get best deal on. It’s not my ride home either but I won’t ever buy a Chrysler product.
