Stupid comparison. The gravity of a vehicle purchase hardly compares to that of creating a human being.

I'd be willing to bet that the average family of any civilized nation racks up more new vehicle purchases than children in a lifetime.

Stupid comparison...they also turn over their children far less frequently, typically only having 2-3 in a lifetime.

SUV sales are going bonkers, as the family station wagon is on the way out with the Commondore and Foulcan being phased out this year.

It's a bit chicken/egg, however, as families like mine have liked the "two compartment" station wagon concept for decades....

If babies came ready to drive, sure. Or if you had a pile of parts dumped in your driveway and pit your suv together, then you can compare to raising a child. I can see a housewife right now, from frame to clear coat , slaving away in her brand new Tahoe or whatever.

Babies for the most part last longer than SUV's. Babies are so desirable that people accept them without a factory warranty. People leave the SUV out in the garage but they invite the baby into their home. Also, a baby will reach autonomous operation long before an SUV. Both SUV's and babies have emission control system but the baby's system is much easier to understand and service when required although the service intervals are much more frequent. Overall I would speculate that more often than not a baby is more desirable than an SUV unless you are part of the "me" generation and can not stand the competition for attention. Beleive me, the baby will win that one every time.

An interesting comparison but as a single data point it's meaningless. Now if they put together the correlation between having children AND getting an SUV we're getting somewhere.

My wife and I are expecting a 2nd child, so we're currently shopping for a large SUV. The Crosstrek is way too small for 2 baby seats, strollers, as well as groceries/other stuff.

I'd wager that, on average, at least one Australian sneezes every single second of the day... by the logic in that article, Australians love sneezing more than they love SUVs AND babies, combined.
