Hi all I have just recieved my motorguard bypass filter (thanks Ralph).
Problem is our standard TP is around 1/4 inch shorter than the minumum required

.

Has anyone in Australia found a supplier/brand that will suit.

Thanks mate, actually our TP is a full 20mm shorter than the US one, so I need 12cm tall TP. Working on the idea of making up a spacer with holes etc that will let our 10cm versions fit, the only problem is it will raise the bottom of the TP to a point where it is not so much of a compressed fit around the sides as the unit is bell shaped. Still formulating, I like problems like this when I have the time to spare.

Anyway if it is easy for you when out and about to keep an eye out, it is appreciated. I have just read where we have a TP standard here so the chances of finding outside sizes might be slim!

Looks like downunder uses the European TP sizes !
Same problem here in Holland.
But does your center fit tightly ?
The European rols have a larger 39-40 mm center core . I am trying to locate a dealer for Silicone hoses to fill the gap.

Hi Trollfan, the European TP sizes makes sense considering Australias history.
Ours have the 40mm centre but so did the TP roll already fitted in the unit so I thought it would be OK.
What's the reasoning behind filling the gap?

Looks like Ralph should consider a "Euro-retro-fit" mod for the MG ..and maybe manage a cross over to the Frantz.

Now two MG's to serve the globe. MG-US and MG Euro

That's a good link, I see your problem! the motorguard from what I can make out doesn't need a tight centre fit. It has a raised section a bit like a washer top and bottom which when each half of the unit is screwed together and compresses the entire roll, the inner raised section exerts extra compression to the centre cardboard + some overlap onto the paper roll realising a better seal. Hope I explained that well enough.
It might be a simple mod for you to try. A copper washer top and bottom around the core? Just a thought, I have yet to see a frantz in real life.

I have a bunch of filters in Australia and they seem to be finding paper that works. I had some trouble with TP in Germany that is about 3 1/2" tall.
I wouldn't put a spacer in the bottom because it would interfere with the bottom seal. If you use a spacer put it in the top. The washer in the top is just to keep the core from going all the way to the top and sealing off the oil flow to the top of the paper. It shouldn't matter that much if the TP is a little short. Just push it down into the bottom half of the filter so that the oil pressure will compress the paper. If you see evidence that the oil pressure is pushing the paper down against the bottom you are alright. It isn't necessary for the core to be tight. The core is pretty much leak resistant. The Motor Guard has always be a higher quality and easier filter to change than the Frantz. I have to stick with what I like the best.

Come on, Ralph!! This is an oportunity!! A "value added" feature!! Get someone to send you the Euro/non-US tp roll and fabricate a piece that makes it work in your current MG. Look at how much wider your market will be then.

You could be Ralph P Woods INTERNATIONAL!!!

That explains the TP sizes in Canada. We can't decide if we're metric or imperial so randomly use either. Guess they decided our butts are metric.

Everything I've found except for a Costco brand is up to 1" (3cm) shorter that the US "ideal" size of 4.5" (11.5cm) tall. The other issue has been the size of the carboard tube as most are 1 5/8" (42mm)or larger here.

Well according to TP Trivia ...we successfully marketed the first TP roll.

Modern Origin of Toilet Paper

In our age, toilet paper originally not in a rollJoseph Gayetty invented toilet paper in 1857. His new toilet paper was composed of flat sheets. Before Gayetty's invention, people tore pages out of mail order catalogs - before catalogs were common, leaves were used. Unfortunately, Gayetty's invention failed. Walter Alcock (of Great Britain) later developed toilet paper on a roll ( instead of in flat sheets). Again, the invention failed.

In 1867, Thomas, Edward and Clarence Scott (brothers from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA) were successful at marketing toilet paper that consisted of a small roll of perforated paper . They sold their new toilet paper from a push cart - this was the beginning of the Scott Paper Company.

That means the rest of the world is just being contrarian

TP Trivia

Back on line now after the wild ride our weather dished out a week or so ago. Time to pay attention to more normal but important stuff like oil and my car.

I have just changed out the US TP roll for the Aussie roll too early but I want to see how it works out. Already with only a couple of hundred miles on the bypass filter the old oil is less black!

Ralph with the restriction after the TP roll I have trouble understanding how oil pressure will stop a near 1/2 of an inch too short roll from floating/vibrating above bottom. There is 0 apparatus above forcing any downward pressure on the TP roll.
I am happy to use our TP but I cannot get my head around how it can work with any certainty.

With the orifice at the outlet the oil pressure should equalize inside the filter. The oil has to go thru the paper to get to the orifice. The proof of how the shorter paper works will be in how the paper is pushed down against the bottom. There should be an imprint of the grating at the bottom of the filter. Motor Guard has always put the orifice at the outlet. I don't think it matters. I might start threading both ports for the orifice. That way someone can use an Allen wrench to put the orifice either in the inlet or outlet. For fuel or with the sandwich adapter it can be removed. the seal is at the bottom half on a Motor Guard MG-30. Push the roll down tight then the oil pressure should do the rest. With the MG-60 the seal is at the top half.
I just bought a Datsun 1981 pickup with a diesel engine. It was abandoned years ago in a grove of trees. I cleaned the giant rats nest off the engine, installed a battery and it started. It's going to be a project.

Thanks Ralph, I will swap this one out early and check to see if there are marks on the bottom. The TP the roll you packaged certainly housed those marks when I swapped it out today.

Is that engine the sd33? its a 6cyl Diesel engine commonly placed in the Patrol MQ/MK series of Nissan/Datsun. We get totally different models compared to the US but some engines might crossover.
