Audi 3.0T (Supercharged) Engines

We be N/A again

(DOHC GM LT6 engine)
That 5.5L 670HP engine is impressive, for sure. However, it is not compact, simple, inexpensive or easy to produce. Nor is is particularly efficient with a operational windows of BSFC hovering around 0.55 Lb fuel per HP hour.

In very general terms, larger, fewer and slower pistons create less piston ring swept area, less combustion surface area (by displacement/air moved) and a more efficient engine due to lower friction (ring swept area) and surface area exposed to heat. This is why very large engines generally have better BSFC numbers.

Ever wonder why piston powered airplanes still use 1930's technology? Because these lightweight engines have BSFC of 0.38 to 0.42, that's why. Remember, we fly by weight and need range.

Just ran across this while doing a little more research on the engine. My 2016 SQ5 is coming up on 300,000 miles with the only major maintenance being a couple water pumps and PCV valve with related cooling pipes and thermostat Etc. Pcv/thermostat was done around 250k. I also drive it like I stole it most of the time. Average mpg over last 80k miles is 21mpg.

I am absolutely dumbfounded by the reliability. I've never seen anything with comparable performance/specs/price/reliability while still being able to run over curbs in "luxury". Everything else I've looked at, there is a sacrifice in some area which is not a bad thing, it is just whatever you need or want. I would love to find something similar but bigger.

BITOG does not recognize that. Only Toyota and Honda.

I had a 2014 Audi S5 and I REALLY liked the 3.0T engine and 7-speed twin-clutch. It loved to rev and it was quick. I owned it for about 36k miles and figured I was already on borrowed time at the point. 😀

Only looked at bmw and mercs a little. I like that they are a little larger, but most of what I have read says the reliability is nowhere near the same as the sq5. I'm guessing mine might not quite be the norm, but I'd be happy with 150k -200k with minor maintenance. In 5ish years, I spent maybe 2500-3k on the sq5 minus brakes/tires/oil. I'm totally cool with that. Sure less is better, but that is fine. All my work has been done at a couple indy shops.
