Not the first time that I have heard of this issue with the 3.0T's. But, goes to show you how expensive long block replacements are nowadays - it's no joke. And that dealer's labor rate is super low as well.

These engines go for 3-8k used. If I had it myself I would replace the valves, springs and retainers along with a timing chain set on the used engine. With the engine out it is not that big a job.

These kind of failures can happen on almost any engine.

Heck, one of the most reliable Ford's built (an oxymoron if there ever was one) was the late 90's Escort.
Port injected, naturally aspirated, slow and low hp, but one heck of a workhorse that many took over 200k with ease.

Yet a small handfull of folks claimed of the valve seats dropping causing serious cylinder damage.
Luckily I wasn't one of them, despite the abuse mine took.

These engines had history of annoying issues. First several years it was water pump and low tension rings. Water pump stayed as an issue. I have seen some well over 200k. But, they were not on par BMW and Mercedes engines, although they compliment S4 in particular, very well.

Very strange. Must have been a one off.
The Audi's are generally as reliable as any Volvo....easily capable of millions of miles

That is S55.
N55 has issue until 2014 when OFHG is changed and if not primed, will throw rod.
B58 are rock solid as they can be. Add from that time N51/52 that really didn’t have any major weakness, unless belt neglected.

My brother loves his 2015 Audi SQ5 with 145k that has been trouble free with first repair being high pressure fuel pump.

Amazing vehicle he picked up two years used for $34k.

I think dealer quote is we don’t really want to do job or easy path replacing entire engine instead of repairing .

No one in their right mind wants to get married to that engine.

Imagine if they put a short block in it and more valves fail a year later.
