Attempting to swap the Jetta...

I agree with rooflessVW.

What are they gonna do with your Jetta now if they replace it for you? Give it to someone else with a minor paint defect? If a paint touch up isn’t good enough for you, then it can’t be good enough for anyone else. In that case should they crush the car?

They will resell it to someone who doesn’t know any better. Most people do not notice such blemishes or even larger ones. There is nothing wrong with requesting a replacement. Something under the clear coat of this size could expand and contract with heat and cause paint issues down the road. Do you want to look forward to paint failure in your cars future? Bitog can have quite the double standard at times. I’ll leave it at that.

The blemish will go away when the OP gets his first "parking lot ding"............
Accidents happen, but my wife and I are very careful when it comes to parking lots. We have managed to avoid such issues with both of our vehicles. They both looked pristine with years of use.

Sorry about your issues . I know you really are into detailing so it will scream at you every time your look at roof.
Exactly. I can live with it if it won’t cause future paint issues. But who is to say it won’t?

I got some very minor rock chips on the paint of my hood and I fear they will always be there because of little paint missing. I try not to look from that angle because I know it is there, and I think it is my first case of car getting dinged up on the road.

Hopefully, it doesn't happen again

And 18 wheelers that rain rocks all over the road.. well, in two lane roads.. can't pass them.

I'm the same way-came out of Costco TODAY-and there is one of their big baskets lodged (literally)up against my wife's 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe XL Limited AWD. It was purchased new. Fortunately no damage-but some things are out of your control. And a lazy idiot is one of them.

There is absolutely positively no way I would let someone paint a panel for that, I get being upset about it, but would take a step back.

Even in the unlikely event they replace the car, that is gonna be a pain in the rear too, new plates, new insurance cards and so on and so forth.

I'd make them document it and live with it... but that is me...

A daily driver will never be perfect. It's not a show car garage queen that has the potential to be perfect. Enjoy the car, maintain it, keep it clean. It's a mass produced tool meant to be used up and serve you. I doubt they'll exchange it and I wouldn't let them repaint it.

You do realize we are talking about THE ROOF? A panel that isn't really next to another panel they would have to blend.

Isn't being ok with them selling it to another unknowing customer a double standard in a way too? What if they too noticed the blemish after purchasing? Should VW replace the car again and again and again?

Sounds like the car would have to be melted for scrap if a paint shop can't fix it.

my car started life in California and the thing is a off white almost eggshell color or cream, not straight white, it is a slightly shade of white if that makes any sense at all, plus my paint is in an otherwise perfect condition... That said the chips are very very small like one of those things that only you know it's there. are you sure this product is not going to do more harm than good?

So, when they clear that roof are you suggesting they should back tape it at the laser welds?

I get what your saying but it's not like repainting a door or fender and having to blend in to the "slab side" of the car.

A paint shop can fix it, I just know it won't be as durable as factory paint. Another customer may be completely fine with an aftermarket paint job. I am not. If the car came from the factory with a defect, I believe the company should take care of their customer.

This reminds me of the blemish you found on the Accord. Did you ever get that fixed? I think it was on the trunk lid if I recall.

If it's any consolation I only discovered several years after I bought the car that the right rear fender of my new Solara had been repainted. I could only see it when a body man pointed out a few specs of dust in the paint. We kept that car in the family for +/- 10 years and that paint still looked good - no chipping, peeling, differential fading - nothing. I never found out why that panel had been painted either.

The (excellent) body man I was seeing said he is regularly asked to paint damaged panels on brand new cars. So it is done.

That's why I now ask for a certification that there has been no body work or re-painting done on any new car I buy.

Who gives that cert? The dealer doesn't strictly know. The first clue we get is that it has a few more miles than usual. I guess most damage occurs on the parking lots outside the factory followed by a trip to a repair location inside the factory. Goes from 3 miles to 9 miles upon delivery...
