ATT buying Directv for 48.5 Billion dollars

Now it's going to get interesting. Comcast bought Time Warner cable for 45 billion.
ATT buying Directv for 48.5 billion. if you think the Fed regulators would reject Comcast buying Time Warner for monopoly reasons, then ATT will have to get rejected buying Directv. I have no idea what is gonna do to ATT U-Verse cable tv when they will own Directv satellite.
The TV industry must be a big profit maker to want to buy out their competitors.

They could be complementary offerings. U-Verse rollout has been slow and will not be rolled out everywhere. In those areas, giving a subscriber the satellite option may make sense. Alas, there will of course be a lot of overlap, too.

Indeed; wouldn't surprise me if the 2 remaining monopolies merge for one super mega provider if high speed internet/TV in the US and completely rape everyone. And with the FCC bought and paid for, they can get rid of net neutrality and really stick it to the US consumer.

Netflix/hulu/amazon prime/movie streaming folks will suffer. the internet data cost cap will be implemented across the USA most likely. I'm an over the air tv guy, but messing with the internet/data/speeds would be hard for me to swallow. My only hope is for Google Fiber to come to Nashville, TN area.

Should Directv raise their prices any more they can disconnect me, I don't need it, been a customer for 14 years.

If you haven't, then please tell us your secret to lower subscription rates, using only one provider for 14 years

I recall a long, long time ago ATT being deemed a monopoly and broken up into 'baby-bells'. The world's gone upside down since then. Appears they're back with a vengence.

This should work well for us consumers.....
 
Had Uverse at my old place, it was OK but not enough channels I like. Too many weird ones I would never watch.

Got Time warner in the new house, and like it alot better. Also they ran another cable to my bedroom, nice to have cable without an extra box rental fee.

I like Time Warner better.
 
AT&T is the king of stupid decisions!

For all that cash and investment they could build out their nearly their entire footprint with fiber to home (FTTH) for all customers with speeds that would blow away the cable providers and match Google Fiber 1 Gig, also they would be able to wire up the remainder of their more rural customers with ADSL2+ and provide them with 48 Mbps. Instead they are BLOWING the financial wad on outdated satellite technology. LTE is no replacement for a wired fiber connection when it comes to data and it costs the consumer a small fortune for heavily capped service.
 
Think about all the rural areas that only can get satellite TV.

My family in Ohio can only get DSL and Satellite TV, there are many areas like this.

And they are not that rural either.

Possibly, or they can buy a revenue stream now.

If they think wireless is the future, then copper or fiber doesn't really play into that vision.

Not saying it's right or wrong. But I could understand the logic of buying a current wireless technology that delivers TV content to the home.

FWIW, I have AT&T FTTH and I don't get anywhere near 1gb/sec. Now if Google shows up as competition, I expect that to happen. But AT&T (and others) will milk the current system as long as they can.
 
A couple years ago the verizon fios installer told me that he would be out of business in a few years after verizon figures out how to do wireless for everything.

UPS will just send a box to your house, and that's it.

I call every year and tell them I want to cancel and switch to Dish. As long as you say the word "cancel" then they will lower your bill $25 for a year. I've been doing this a few years now. One year I kept complaining and got a bunch of extra channels for 3-6 months. Now I just stop at the $25.
 
Oh no.

I really, really despise AT+T. They have been ripping me off for the last 40 years. I've never been able to deal with them, and get a proper price.

Our 2 line office phone and ultra slow DSL is nearly $400/month. And we don't use it much, as we are never there. We use our cell phones for calls. AT+T has been jacking up the price and providing substandard service forever.

Comcast cable is offering $39 phone/TV/internet in August at my office. Guess what I'm doing?
