nothing wrong with useing it. the dealer can not deny your warranty because of it. lots of hd owners use it. i use a 10w40 oil.

I guarantee you if you use ATF in the primary and the dealer wants to be a prick and deny a warrantee claim for lubrication type damage to the primary, they will. Now it will be up to you to work uphill to defend your position, regardless of the Magnussin Moss act. That could include hiring a very expensive attorney. I don't want to chance going through all of that just to use ATF. I will wait two years for the warantee to expire.

That dealer would have to be one helluva prick to deny you warranty coverage because of the ATF. Plus, it isn't there call in the end anyways. Customer Service @ H-D would become your best friend.

I think I will go back to the ATF, as my trans seems to have a louder "Click" noise on shifts, both up and down, with the 15/50 M1 EP oil in the primary. With the ATF that noise was not there.

That's the funniest thing I've heard in awhile. Do you think the dealer is your friend? These are the same HD dealers that fought anybody wanting syn oil in there bikes - or any oil w/o the Harley logo for that matter. I mean, really, you go for warranty work on your primary and the wrong lube is in there - no dealer is going to cover that repair!

Maybe no dealer that you know but I've been loyal to my dealer. The sales manager is a good friend and I know the parts manager, service manager and owner pretty well. If they really thought a failure was my fault they may not cover it but otherwise, they would be running it through warranty (if I was still in warranty).

Although, I do tend to agree with your general point that for the average unknown customer many dealers may try to deny a claim if non-approved fluids were used. I do tend to stick closer to the factory recommendations when in warranty. Really, the dealership/manufacturer must PROVE that a failure was caused by the non-approved fluid/filter or whatever but who wants the headache of having to deal with that situation.

That is a good point. But I think the dealer would have a stronger argument if a non-approved lube was used than the customer trying to explain his/her point for using it.

GMBoy,
I just happen to work at a dealer, and yes they can be your best friend if you aren't a jerk off. I know that there are plenty of bad dealers that have no problem screwing people over on a warranty claim such as this type of situation - we are not one of them.

Well, I'm no jerk off but I still get amazed at what goes on at some HD dealers. It's no different than car dealers. It's just sad that these few ruin the reputation of good guys like you. I must add that I did find a real nice dealer here in Texas that I really like. Also, while in Sturgis this year my counterbalancer sprocket worked itself loose (common problem) and the great folks at Black Hills H-D took me in 2 hours before closing time (plus the next day was a holiday and they were closed) and fixed my back so I could get back on the road. And they charged a fair $117 to do the work plus a wash. Nice people, awesome dealership.
