Honda part number 25430-plr-003. Honda doesn't list when this should be replaced. Does anyone have any ideas? It sells for about $14 and appears to be in-line toward the rear of the tranny. I plan on doing my first drain and fill at 30,000 miles, do you think the original filter has picked up a few "wear metals" and should be replaced at this point? I'm not sure how difficult it is to get to; I haven't crawled around looking for it yet.

The in-line filter is only there to catch any shavings during break-in and/or in the event of a major failure. Otherwise, I don't believe that its purpose is for added filtration during the life of the unit, except under those special circumstances. I guess you could replace it, but I wouldn't expect the filter to act as a "normal" ATF filter like you'd expect it to.

There's no pan on a Honda unit anyway...it drains from the case.

Mike,
Why do you not think that this filter will perform as a normal oil filter? Have you cut one open yet? If so, please post some pictures b/c I haven't.

I can't think of the source at the moment, but I remember reading from some publication (at some point) that the filter was installed to trap metal particles during break-in and at the time of failure only...then again, my memory is known to be troublesome.

Ah ..the plot thickens...

So...

..this should read...

"The in-line filter is (allegedly) only there to catch break-in debris or debris from some catastrophic component failure. This suggests that it doesn't provide any active/ongoing purpose ..in my mind. I can't find the article that mentioned this ..at this time."

Hi ,

I started using neomodium magnets in my trans pan, about a year ago.........,
When I checked a month ago, there was a finer metal particles on them, compared to the OEM magnets.......

I think the neomodium mags, offer an enxtra layer of filtration protection.......,
They are alot less likely to actually let the metal get back into suspension.
I bought them off ebay , they are about the size of a quarter, and amazingly strong...........

I plan to use these magnets on every auto trans I will buy in the future.

Just FYI....:)

Do the new Honda's have the magnetic drain plug like the previous generation? My 2001 doesn't have any filters, just that plug. Whereas, the 2nd gen CR-V's have in-hose Magnafine-style filters near the cooler. All cars should have this feature.

just for the heck of it I ordered a filter. It is a metal can, about 2 inches diameter and 2 inches high and feels quite heavy for its size. When I do get around to replacing it, I'll cut the old one open, I'd love to know what's inside. yes the drain plug has a magnetic tip.

I have an '05 Odyssey. I do an ATF drain and fill (3.5 qts Honda ATF) every oil change. The Ody has the same ATF filter deal. Just there for break-in. My Ody at 33k miles has almost no metallic "paste" on the drain plug magnet in the last change or so.

drain and fill and off you go... Its burried inside the transmission and its nothing to worry about. Service every 30k miles and sleep easy at night.

Well, I won't argue with the intended purpose of the in-line filter here ..but I've never seen a transmission that didn't shed particles throughout its entire life.

Nobody at BITOG sleeps well at night unless they're really wasting lots of cash and calling it cheap insurance. It's really a sleeping aid

DC84, the filter is an inline unit and is accessable by removing the airbox. it is external to the transmission itself.

If the filter is for break in only, does the factory replace it after the transmission has been run awhile?

Little to much gunk in new tranny, block or partially block fluid flow... new transmission time.
