ATF D2 in a manual gearbox

Hi List,

following a friend's advice that uses it in his Supra and Celica ST185, I replaced my 75W-90 oil in my Celica GT four ST205's gearbox with an ATF Dexron 2 oil.

Even if the ST185 and 205 boxes are very similar, if not perfectly equals, in my servicing manual is not listed ATF D2, but only GL4 75W-90 & 80W-90.

BTW, I was surprised by the smoothness, the velocity in changing gears and by the new possibility of change down to the first gear with the car still in movement !

I used this oil for 40.000 kms, and have not had any issue:
I recently opened the gearbox because I had crunching changing down from fourth to third gear, and I only found this:

The teflon slide of the 3rd-4th gear fork was broken, but I do think it's not oil-related... I think we have to learn not to keep our hand on the shift-knob when we're driving

Your thoughts about ATF D2 in a manual box ?

I would never but an ATF in a gear box calling for GL4 70W90!!!! The chemistrys are different, the viscosity is way off and the EP and AW properties are totaly different as well. I am guessing this transmissions gears and bearings will die an early death.

I would be curious to know what kind of condition the other fork inserts are in?

If the other inserts are in good shape, especially the 1/2 fork, then i would agree the use of ATF in this application was not the cause of your trouble.

There are a lot of people that are NOT aware what a resting hand on the shifter can do. This is one result for sure.

I told 40.000 kms without an issue because that is a common problem on all the GT four boxes, even those who use 75W-90 oil !

And even if I used ATF D2 the 1-2 fork is perfect, but it's even true that 1-2 fork has not the teflon sliders.
