ATF cooler line for 2005 Corolla?

I have a 2005 Toyota Corolla with 60k miles.

I have been pondering doing a flush myself to save a few bucks. (At the same time I was considering getting a Magnafine ...)

Naturally I have 2 ATF radiator lines. One is "high" the other is "low".

The "high" line connects to the top of the radiator and also connects to the higher connection point in the transmission (happens to be closer to the driver).

Similarly, the "low" line connects to the bottom of the radiator and also connects to the lower connection point in the transmission (happens to be closer to the passenger).

I have 2 questions.

First question:

Is this enough for the "guru's" to tell me which is the cooler line.

Second question:

Does anyone know typical temperature differences between the hot and cold lines?

A friend has one of those laser temperature readers. I was hoping that I could just point it to the individual lines and figure it out from there.

Thanks in advance ...

( I am trying to avoid pulling the wrong line and the mess accordingly

Drive the car for about 10 minutes and feel both lines with your hand, you will tell.

Go for the Magnefine, best $20 spent.

Pull both lines, shove each into a empty water bottle and run engine for 10 seconds.

Go for Amsoil ATF.

From Toyota Nation where a guy was doing the same thing on a 9th gen Corolla (an 06')

"1) I removed the hose from the BOTTOM line coming from the radiator, hopeing that it was the return line from the radiator (classically, coolers run the hot fluid into the top and cool fluid from the bottom). Had my wife start engine and I was right. I will add that this line returns to the transmission lower and slightly to the passenger side of the other line. Some other posts about earlier transmissions refer to the line on the "passenger sde", so perhaps they are similar in earlier generations too."

Here is a link to his entire write up.

Your welcome. It really doesn't matter if you had no information on this anyway. Like the guy in the write up said, unhook the line, have a buddy start it up briefly and watch for ATF coming out.

I am putting a Magnefine on mine this week. Just waitin on it to come in the mail.

Please snap some photos of how it goes for you.

Here are the lines on my 08 Corolla:

What size Magnefine did you end up ordering? 3/8? 5/16? 1/2?

Where did you order it from?

I went with the 3/8 size after I saw some posts on another forum that this was the size. Pretty scientific of me hah? LOL

Thanks for the reply. I actually emailed the Magnefine site sponsor. They told me 3/8's too. Considering you have already ordered yours, if for what ever reason it does not fit, please let me know.

I was going to order AMSOIL ATF. I am debating though on getting two 1 gallons, or one 2.5 gallon. Either way, I would flush until I had about 1 to 1.5 quarts left, then drive a bit and top off with the remaining quart if needed.

I'll definitely let you know if this isn't the right size, but I think it is.

I thought about going with the Amsoil ATF, but decided to stick with the Toyota T-IV in this transmission. Read some threads about this transmission liking Toyota genuine OEM fluid. Your mileage may vary though.

ETA: I did order mine directly from Magnefine as Napa wanted a ridicolous 28 bucks for it.

I read this a couple of times. What he didn't state (or so I could not clearly determine) where he removed the hose from; the trans or the rad. He just said the lower of the two hoses. Hence it leaves those who are told to disconnect from the cooler somewhat confused.

I think he removed it from the trans end.

The cooler lines vary from metal to rubber tubing as it snakes its way around. A "lower" rubber tubing was simply removed at one of the intersections of rubber to metal. For the Corolla, your visibility is actually pretty good, so it is not too hard to determine.

Okay ..so there's only one metal rubber intersection on the lower hose/line ..and disconnecting it there will produce flow from the hose and not the tube.

Actually, there are a couple of metal rubber intersections along the way. Thankfully there is a set that is fairly easy to get to.

Found this great web site that shows the transmission cooling system here:

http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_U_2005_TOYOTA_COROLLA_ZZE130L-DEPDKA_3514.html

The "lower" line is the return line.

So at location 32942, I was thinking of replacing that guy with some longer hose and placing the Magnefine filter in the front passenger corner.

I thought about 32922A cutting a 3.5 inch section out and putting in the Magenfine, but with it dangling over open road though, not sure if I am keen on that. This would be an easiest spot though and would result in no extra hose purchase.

FYI

Edit: If you click on the number, it actually gets highlighted in the diagram.

The Magnefine is pretty small and lightweight. Its easily held up by being connected to the hoses. I have it in my 1994 Camry 4 cyl and just positioned it in the return line so it would be held in a place where it would not be hitting anything. So its dangling in my case but between the transmission and radiator.

That's what I thought too Donald. These things don't weigh anything, so I am going to have my dangling, albeit not hitting anything as I drive.

Great diagram Oak! I love that site. You can put in your VIN there and get tons of neat diagrams. Nice find
