Ask someone the last time they checked the oil and

Last time you checked your oil and they say either:

Its at 50 something percent
Or
I had it changed about 2 months ago...

What is it with people nowadays? Especially many of the younger ones. I had to show my daughters 23 year old boyfriend how to add windshield washer fluid.

A chick I was dating a few years ago had asked me what I was going to do on my day off,and I said,"Probably change my oil",and she said,"You`re supposed to change the oil in your cars??". I was like,huh?????? Haha!

I used to have a friend in University who refused to learn anything about his car, apparently it was too hard and difficult to, and since he paid the dealer good money to do basic maintenance, they must be doing a better, more complete job then he ever could. When the battery in his key fob went dead and wouldn't unlock the doors he took it to the dealer.

But then again, blame a generation of parents with more money then sense handing a kid a car and a pile of money to sit in University rather then actually doing anything.

University was rather common for stuff like that though in all due respect. Especially engineering, where people always seemed exceptionally confident they "know better then you" because they're in a Masters program or something. All book smart, all ignorant, no sense. I watched a guy try to pull start an automatic car because he knew engineering.

I always check when I'm buying gas, and I've had people come up to me asking if I need any help because they saw I had the hood up.

One guy even said "don't they check the oil every few months when you get your oil changed".

...and this is part of the reason why I don't trust used cars.

A friend of mine proudly stated that she knew she needed to change her oil, because the diptstick was nearly to the L. Better than most, I had to admit...

Actually my favourite by a mile is when people go to a quick lube place and are convinced that absolutely every bit of maintenance required gets done that way.

When's the last time your transmission fluid was changed? "I got my oil changed not too long ago." This coolant looks bad too, it should be flushed, was it ever changed? "They topped it off when I get my oil changed, it must be fine."

"I don't get it, normal people never change coolant or the transmission oil, I've never heard of it before. I'm sure you're just paranoid."

Usually followed up by asking if they've read the manual and usually thats summarized by some sort of goofy chuckle like "I read the part on how to set the clock!".

society encourages/breeds arrogance as well as ignorance, so much for the younger generations nowadays.

Thank goodness I came from an family of engineer, where even my wifey can take on a wrench and change air filters, car battery, etc. and my younger sister can change a 13" suzuki tires in 7 mins.

I've been conditioned to do things myself and only by myself (within limitations of course) would I be able to live up to my own expectations, including fixing automobiles.

Kids who expressed unwillingness to learn shall realise that throughout their life, they either (a) succumb to other people's mediocrity (services-wise), or (b) frequently being taken advantage of, or a combination of both.

Too many people never took the initiative to learn what is required for car maintenance. They take either a "Someone can be paid to do it for me" or "What do you mean I have to change the oil?" stance.

I am blessed that I am a hardcore muscle car man. My girlfriend thinks I'm a genius when it comes to cars, as I have repaired many things on her Jaquar that many technicians either couldn't repair....or shunned away.

A friend has a Saab turbo that he once ran almost 3 qts low. When I asked him about it, he responded that the thought it was a sealed system and didn't require attention. My response was "why do you think they have a dipstick?"

One day it will catch up with people and they'll realize that mastering skinny jeans was a complete waste of time and that guy over there is like a god [censored] cavemen who hath conquered nature and science to command as his plaything, master of his domain, trouncing their inabilities to adapt to fluctuations within the fascinating and ever changing rhelm of human accomplishments...

And then of course; they can ask him for a favour and pay him in beer for it and bow to what they must learn to respect.

On another note,

Why is it that auto manufacturers LIE about the lifetime fill in a transmission or transfer case? My girlfriends transfer case was called a "lifetime fill". That is a lie. At 115,000 miles, it started popping on cold days. I changed the oil, less than 300 mL were removed with two gear teeth on the magnetic plug. I refilled it with Amsoil Severe Gear. To this day (2 years later) it's still going strong with no popping again.
