New? Old? Single stage? Dual?

Most here get the 7-8hp and 24 inch swath as a minimum. Even from walmart.

Owner says been used four or five times ,Two stage. asking $500, new at home depot says he paid $1100. I have a 1980 10h.p tech engine blower now, motor runs like a top everything else is really worn.

Here I was thinking you could get a (non-airiens) 824 for around $750 new.

I have the single stage version with the 5 hp which is just about right for Missouri. Product is well made. To me, it compares to Toro. A few snows 5 hp power was almost not enough, if the snow was heavy. I would think more horsepower would be better based on your location. I purchased my Ariens end of year half priced at Home Depot brand new. I was in the right place at the right time and seized the moment!

I think Airens makes high quality OPE. They are not part of MTD yet. But I think 5 HP and 22" are too small for areas that get any decent amount of snow. There are some new monster ones usually for sale on EBAY at VERY good prices, I am sure they have CHONDA engines.

I bought a used Montgomery Wards 28" (1980s) last winter and it served me well (not perfectly) last winter. But for backup I got another. See below.

hemitom, I assume you live close to me and have the same climate. We get 4+ inch snow storms about 3-4 times a year. I live in a standard 1/4 acre suburban home, and my 5HP Ariens two-stage is perfect for me. I need to consider garage storage for the unit as well.

I was thinking the same . Most of the time i push the snow from the back of the house to the front and then use the blower to clear it away. For this purpose i thought a 5 h.p would do, my 10 h.p is overkill for this.

I have a long drive alongside my house that ends at the garage behind my house. Where it ends, the L-shape of the house and the garage give me nowhere to throw the snow. When I get many inches, it's a nightmare.

My neighbor has a single stage snowblower. It's useless for the snow plowed up at the end of the drive by the city, and has to shovel by hand. My 2-stage gobbles it up and spits it out.
