This filter was in use for about 400 hours and 10+ years (yes, more than 10 years), on my Gravely PM252 ZTR mower.
The hydraulic system uses individual pumps/motors, but a shared sump/filter unit.
It had Mobil 1 15w-50. Same went back in.

The rust on top of the base is obviously from the long duration in service, but the filter was perfectly fine internally.
The media was firm but not brittle and had very little loading and there were no tears or voids; just the way I'd want it to be.
Louvers were adequately open.

I continue to use filters way longer than the " ... or one year" mantra, and have yet to see a problem related to time-in-service in any filter I've ever cut open.

Any metal in the pleats?
Nope. Actually very clean, overall.

Why change it now ? Damage is already done .
Just had some free time to do so, and had been meaning to get around to it. No real "damage" was present.
I guess it could have gone 15 years? More? Who knows ...
10 years was enough for me.

Hydraulic systems like this generally come up to full temp, and keep the moisture out. It's not like an engine; where one of the byproducts of combustion is water vapor. So the oil stays fairly clear of any moisture inside the system. Hence no rust or corrosion, generally. So as long as the oil stays reasonably free of contamination, there's no real reason to think that a few years is a limit for a filter. 10 years and this was just fine internally. Even externally, the only indication was some rust on the base plate; not anywhere close to a risk of rusting through.

Yeah, I don't buy into when oil filter companies tell me they have a 5 year shelf life. I run older ones than that and have no issues.
