Today I went Jeepin with a club that I ocasionally go out with.

We just do easy slow stuff. One guy had a Jeep Grand Cherokee. This Jeep only has an electric engine cooling fan that is designed to come on to cool the engine @ 222F.

Once we got into the slow speed stuff he began to have overheating problems. Not really overheating but puking coolant out of the overflow bottle.

I determined that there were no obvious leaks but that there was no pressure in the cooling system. The upper hose was soft when it should have been hard with pressure.

Once it cooled enough we popped the radiator cap off and it was junk! The rubber was hard and cracked so there is no way that it could hold pressure.

So what was happening was that the coolant was boiling before the fan was set to come on.

I scrounged through my junk and I found a usable 7LB radiator cap. 7LBs is not much but it's 7lbs more than what we currantly had. Using a 7LB cap will raise the boiling point to 233F which is above the 222F temp that the fan will come on at.

Since it was cool out I knew that the thing wont get to 233F and this will let us continue on our run.

Another guy started trouble!. Telling me and everyone else that since the Jeep comes with an 18LB cap that it needs an 18LB cap and nothing else will work.

Remember that we are out in the desert and theres not a auto parts store for miles. Were doing what we can with what we have available.

Then this guy says that when summer comes the thing is going to overheat. This is probly true. I then tell him. "Summer! I'm just trying to get him out of the desert, he needs to buy the proper cap tomorrow".

The owner agreed that he will buy the proper cap tomorrow.

The Jeep ran the rest of the day w/o any issues. Yes I'm sure that at times it was very close to pushing coolant out but it got us through the day.

Guy was an absolute bonehead!

Of course and 18LB cap is best but lets think.....UM DS there isn't an autozone in the sticks.

Argueing with idiots is a waste of out valueble air

"Yes, you're absolutely right!! I had better get that cap off of there. What was I thinking?!?

You need to listen to this fellow here. He really knows what he's talking about".

I've used 7 lb caps in cars that had questionable cooling systems for a very long time w/o issues. Some people just like to hear themselves.

Pressurized cooling systems didn't start showing up untill the 40's. First they were 4lb systems then 7lb. My Peterbilt is a no pressure cooling system. If it get to 212F its going to boil, but 200F is considered overheating with it.

I hear you, I guy once tried to tell me that a STOCK Dodge Cummins had 500hp/800tq

I eventually gave him a printout from Dodge's website. He was just about to graduate from UTI and thought he was a master tech or something.

vikas -- from time to time, one HAS to argue with a bonehead. it's just part of life.bitog is entertainment for me. i read random threads, but to seek out boneheads just to argue doesn't make sense to me. i refer, again, to my signature line -- especially the second half. why argue with a bonehead if "... he doesn't know you have the better of him." it accomplishes nothing. some bitogers argue with others, and say the same thing over and over, and the point just doesn't sink in.some argue just to argue, or to get others going.that's their business. we're all different, and to each his own.
i have no problem mixing it up with someone, as long as it's intelligent discussion. intelligent people pick their battles in life.other people bang their heads against the same wall repeatedly -- and all that will get you is a headache. again, to each his own. have a good day.

Wasn't the problem that after a realistic fix, the bonehead started the argument?

You really hate to let a dummy have the last word on a forum, but they outnumber those that know anything and seem to have nothing else to do.

labman -- i was responding to vikas' question -- "if you don't like arguing with boneheads,...", not referring to the OP.in your second sentence, you make a good point, -- but, as i said, to each his own.
'gotta go shovel slop. take care.
